They can’t help themselves, bless their hearts. The GOP got so much undeserved credit from the Iran hostage debacle under Carter that since then their only foreign policy goal when a (D) president is in office is to somehow repeat it.

Reagan cultists believe the Iranians released the hostages a few minutes after St. Ron was sworn in because they were afraid of what he might do. In fact, the process had been going on for some time, with Algeria bribed to serve as an intermediary, and the release was timed as it was in an effort to humiliate Carter.
To his credit, the real-life Reagan didn’t stand for this and sent Carter to greet the hostages as his official representative.
