I give him 1 point, and one only, for criticizing the Sandanistas for their dreadful treatment of the Moskito (Mosquito?) Indians. He may have been the only lefty voice that consistently hammered that point.

Well, that was kind of the beginning of the AIM split - I was one back then who ended up in the Means camp, much like Ward did. However, Russell ended up coming to terms with libertarianism, while most of the others went down an even deeper socialist path. I will agree that he joined with others shouting about the Sandinista treatment of natives, but I believed back then, and I still believe today, that his sole purpose for doing so was to continue doing what his goal was - destroying the American Indian Movement.
