The end of WWII marked the beginning of the end of the era of European colonization of faraway lands. Some ended more-or-less peacefully, others…..not so much (France and its colonies in Vietnam and Algeria immediately spring to mind).

The indigenous peoples of Alaska and Hawaii got MUCH better deals in the 1950’s than the indigenous peoples of mainland US got in the 1800’s.
