Roberts and Alito would have been lynched if they hadn’t been smarter than their interlocutors. A group of men cannot lynch a woman. As a matter of group dynamics, it causes revulsion in observers. It’s a losing strategy.

The GOP should not try to lynch Sotomayor. They should engage her where she, and Obama, are weakest: in their invidious stereotyping of human beings, and in their identity politics.
