There is a setting in the WinXP desktop configuration that allows you to show only settings that the monitor will work with. If you have an LCD, having that turned on can block access to some settings, such as the 800x600 setting you desire since the LCDs work best at their native resolution. I can’t give a step by step to get to it since I am on my Vista machine right now, but that might be preventing you from selecting what you want.
