Abrams tends to work best when he has a blank canvas to paint on. When he’s got somebody else’s work in front of him, he’s almost mystically compelled to slap it with white paint and then start over again. He can’t pull the “time travel reset button” on Star Wars that he could on Star Trek.

Yes but, Abrams didn’t write them. The new Star Trek movies were Orci and Kurzman’s messes.
