It’s a tough split but not insurmountable. The progressive fringe is always susceptible to being drawn towards Ralf Nader-type spoilers. There is a serious effort (sites like Dkos) to push the Dems towards nominating unelectable loons but the party has done a decent job at resisting so far.

The last remotely “unelectable loon” run by the Dems was Michael Dukakis — 26 years ago.
