Excellent Rachel Maddow Segment: The Radical Racist Context of Bundy Ranch

Sovereign citizens running amok

This is something Rachel Maddow does very well — take the time to go into a complex subject in enough depth to really be informative; in this case, it’s a good look into the Radical Racist Context Missed in the Bundy Ranch Hype.

I wonder if the feds knew going in that Bundy was a racist freakazoid and he would discredit himself if they backed away and gave him some time after giving him a global platform with the initital confrontation? I would be very pleased if that were the case; it would show that the real authorities are willing to play political hardball with these kooks. This is a game in which the latter are completely outclassed.

Any law enforcement officer with ties to the CSPOA needs to be suspended and put up for review.

They can bring all the guns they want to the table, but in a battle of wits, they are completely unarmed.

To me, that’s the most troubling aspect of the whole subculture. Just what we need is a bunch of wackos winding up in places of real power doing whatever the fuck they want. Accountability and therefore checks & balances go out the window once they decide they don’t answer to any authority other than the ones they invent / hallucinate.

I don’t know if the feds knew about Bundy’s racist attitudes, but they’re not blind and they’re not as dumb as the yahoos think they are. I’m sure they looked at the militias and idiots that were going to descend on Bundy Ranch and decided that it wasn’t worth a firefight. Just back off, let them think they won, and then let them hang themselves by getting overconfident.

The whole idea of one of the good ole boys becoming the Town sheriff should be enough to make anyone sit up and realize just how fucked up that scenario is.

Here’s one example of what happens:

On Friday, the ACLU settled a class action lawsuit, pending court approval, against officials in the East Texas town of Tenaha and Shelby County over the rampant practice of stopping and searching drivers, almost always Black or Latino, and often seizing their cash and other valuable property. The money seized by officers during these stops went directly into department coffers. It was highway robbery, targeting those who could least afford to challenge the officers’ abuse of power, under the guise of a so-called “drug interdiction” program and made possible by Texas’s permissive civil asset forfeiture laws.

And further, because these benefits are equally available to white people, but (conservatives presume) but only minorities take them, this venality is peculiar to minorities, while white people are morally superior.

All this racism is implicit in the claim that Democrats buy minority votes with welfare and food stamps.

From the comments (Bolding mine):

Do you remember the Freedom Riders? Busloads of white kids from up north going down to Dixie to stand with their black brothers and sisters for freedom? Imagine a few busloads of black people, doesn’t have to be kids, just folks who know better than the trash the Progressives are talking, going out to Nevada to stand with the Bundy’s and their supporters. Imagine a few dozen or a few hundred. Remember the pictures the other day with the BLM goons and their dogs? Remind you of anything? Imagine the photo ops with black folk standing with their white brothers and sisters. I know BLM has pulled back for now, but if somebody could pull something like that off, what a statement.

Yeah, the only problem will be getting those busloads of black people who agree with Bundy.

The reason why the vast majority of black voters cast their votes for Democratic candidates is because Republicans and conservatives still hold their entire ethnicity in thinly veiled contempt.

The whole liberal plantation concept is itself massively insulting to black voters, as it posits their support can be bought by the appallingly low sums of financial support offered by minimum wage jobs, food stamps and welfare. It’s not that Democrats support these programs, it’s that Republicans policy positions are inhumanly cruel and sociopathic.

Republicans have major players lining up for 2016 with track records of opposing the 1960’s civil rights acts. People who believe it would be preferable, legally, if we went back to a country that allowed segregation in public accommodations.

Looking a party which harbors that kind of fuckfaced dumbshittery almost any thinking, well adjusted empathic person would stand up and just walk away.

Cliven Bundy’s Daughter Slams Sean Hannity | Mother Jones

Meanwhile, Bundy’s daughter, Shiree Bundy Cox, is striking back at conservatives who have turned tail on Bundy, especially Hannity. In a Facebook post Thursday night, she accused Hannity of abandoning her father and pandering to ratings. Here’s a snippet:

I’m sure most of you have heard the news about my dad being called a racist. Wow! The media loves to take things out of context don’t they? First off I’d just like to say that my dad has never been the most eloquent speaking person. Like someone said, he’s a Moses who needs an Aaron to speak for him. This is true. Second, however, is that the media has turned this into a circus side show. It’s like their trying to throw us off the real subject. Why was this ever even brought up? What does this have to do with land rights issues? Sean Hannity was all for reporting the happenings at the Bundy Ranch until this popped up. I wonder if someone hoped it would be that way…By the way, I think Mr. Hannity is more worried about his ratings than he really is about what my dad said. If he supports a supposed racist, what will that do to his ratings? He’s already lost his #1 spot on Fox.

Cox, who is one of 14 children, also suggested that the controversy concerning Bundy’s racist comments had somehow been orchestrated to undermine her father’s cause:

Glenn Beck was never 100% on board with my dad, but now he has an excuse to distance himself even farther. Could there be people out there who want it that way? Get the un main stream media out of the way from reporting this situation in a positive light and the battle is more than won for the opposing side…Again I’d like to ask, “What does my dad’s opinion on the state of the Blacks on welfare have to do with the land rights issue?” Nothing! It’s a detouring tactic. It’s taking away from the real issues and what has been accomplished. The mainstream media want this to happen to make people deviate from the real important things and focus on a comment that has absolutely no relevance. It’s a tactic that has been used for decades. I hope people will see this for what it really is.

NRA’s Wayne LaPierre puts out a calming message to the nation.

Freedom has never needed our defense more than now. Almost everywhere you look, something has gone wrong. You feel it in your heart, you know it in your gut. Something has gone wrong. The core values we believe in, the things we care about most, are changing. Eroding. Our right to speak. Our right to gather. Our right to privacy. The freedom to work, and practice our religion, and raise and protect our families the way we see fit. Those aren’t old values. They aren’t new values. They are core freedoms, the core values that have always defined us as a nation. And we feel them — we feel them — slipping away.

We know, in the world that surrounds us, there are terrorists and home invaders and drug cartels and carjackers and knockout gamers and rapers [sic], haters, campus killers, airport killers, shopping mall killers, road-rage killers, and killers who scheme to destroy our country with massive storms of violence against our power grids, or vicious waves of chemicals or disease that could collapse the society that sustains us all. I ask you. Do you trust this government to protect you? We are on our own.

This election is going to be a bare-knuckled street fight. They’re going after every House and Senate seat, governor’s chair and statehouse they can get their hands on — laying the groundwork to put a Clinton back in the White House. They intend to finish the job, to fulfill their commitment — their dream — of fundamentally transforming America into an America you won’t recognize. But mark my words: The NRA will not go quietly into the night. We will fight.

It is helpful to note that there have been exactly two periods in US history where large numbers of US citizens had a serious beef with the Federal government itself.

The Civil War era and the Civil Rights era.

So I regard vehement anti-Federalism as basically neo-Confederacy with a thin veneer of deniability.

Because its sounds like a formula for a tiny oligarchy to just have a sheriff with no oversight. Sure, “the people” are supposed to be the watchmen…but that hasn’t stopped Joe Arpaio from running rougtshod over people’s rights. You’ve got this little terrarium-scale social system in which implicit networks—everybody knowing everybody, “good ‘ole boys” network, etc—can subvert the explicit structure of how things should work (even by emic standards), and there’s really no remedy if the implicit network systems fouls things. To say nothing of this micro-state system of sheriffs means that being an outsider is a giant liability.

If you then fold in the historical precedents, the picture gets even worse. Enclose so much authority in such small, manipulable package and you get rump feudalism. We have a huge, problematic history with this in this country—Jim Crow was all about collusion between legal authorities building a discriminatory system and extralegal actors who enforced discrimination with intimidation and violence. It wasn’t a coincidence that the South was anti-federalist, anti-“big government.”

Western intel suggests Syria can still produce chemical arms

Syria maintains an ability to deploy chemical weapons, diplomats say, citing intelligence from Britain, France and the United States that could strengthen allegations Syria’s military recently used chlorine gas in its bloody civil war.

“We are convinced, and we have some intelligence showing, that they have not declared everything,” a senior Western diplomat told Reuters, adding that the intelligence had come from Britain, France and the United States.

When asked how much of its program Syria has kept hidden, the diplomat said: “It’s substantial.” He offered no details.

They’re flailing.

They had an Icon, a rancher in a white cowboy hat, riding a horse, waving the symbol of the country he doesn’t believe exists flag. He was marketable - that’s exactly it. And that was a lot of his appeal, and why a lot of wingnuts were overlooking what his position actually is.

Now? he’s shot himself in the foot they put in their own mouths, to torture a metaphor. Some who were cautious enough have been able to claim they never supported him anyway (I’m looking at YOU, Kraphammer), some are trying to simultaneously denounce Bundy AND shift the conversation (Hannity, that’d be you), and a lot are mystified why this guy, who’s saying what they all think, is being pilloried. But even they sense the momentum slipping away.

Give them a day, and Frank Luntz or a Luntz Equivalent to put out a talking point they can all gather around. Right now they’re throwing up trial balloons.

First it was “I don’t believe he said it. Prove it!” The video killed that one.

Then it was “You took that out of context!”, but his inability to shut up killed that one.

Now it’s “The Librul Media tricked him into talking!”, but I don’t see that one working out either.

Oh, and buy more guns. Lots of guns. Even if you can’t afford it, because can you afford not to?

I think there is a bit of a communication problem between liberals and conservatives when it comes to the definition of racism.
I suspect that many conservatives truly don’t think they are racists* because they like individual black or brown people that they know. They just have a problem with “those people over there.” Because their culture appears different it is easy to be afraid of them, unsympathetic towards their problems and don’t feel any connection to them-they are “other”, and it is their fault that they are that way.

I noted that Bundy doesn’t seem to be saying bad things about Hispanics. He probably knows a lot of them, went to school with them, has lived and worked with them for years. He knows enough as individuals that he can see them as people, not an undifferentiated mass.
I’m guessing he knows very few blacks and sees them, with a few exceptions, as an alien group that are pretty much the same as one another.

He also apparently got a very sketchy education if he thinks slavery was good for strengthening Black families.

*edited to say: which doesn’t mean they aren’t racists.

they don’t understand the subtleties of racism == thinking all black people are inherently inferior vs. racism == thinking somehow black people are especially prone to sitting around on their asses collecting welfare money

either way, they clearly have an ignorant and prejudicial view of black folk

racism is a philosophy where behavior characteristics are determined by ancestry. prejudice is when you have an opinion about how somebody will act because of some characteristic about them before you know anything else about them

prejudiced people, those who pre-judge, can be prejudiced without being necessarily racist

however, “i think this about most black people but i am not a racist because i think some other black people are exceptions to it” is not going to cut a lot of ice with me, anyway…

Pasture Manning steps up to the plate for Bundy.

Birther pastor James David Manning recorded a video response Thursday immediately upon turning off a live news conference held by Bundy, whom he said was “absolutely, 100 percent correct.”

“Cliven Bundy is no racist; he is a man of compassion,” Manning said. “Only a person with compassion would ask the question: Are you doing better now sitting on the sidewalks in a government-subsidized house of Las Vegas, or would you rather be back in South Carolina with a garden, where you can go out and eat fresh tomatoes right out of the field, you can go and eat your vegetables right out of the field, grow your own cucumbers and have your own chickens and your own hogs — and are you better off now?”

While it’s debatable whether poor people are better off living in government-subsidized urban housing or owning a small farm in a rural setting, Manning spoke for nearly nine minutes without uttering the most relevant word in the Bundy controversy: slavery.

“He has no hatred for black people, he’s just wondering would they be better off under the circumstances that preceded the present mindset of civil rights, the African-American identity and other things,” Manning said.

The good Pasture seems to have forgotten about the slavery part.

Don’t remember who the good Pasture is?

Justice Roberts is a prime example of this narrow, pig ignorant paucity of vision.

There was an excellent study done some time back, which I have mentioned many times, though perhaps not here. Two economists wanted to study the effect of ‘race related’ names on hiring, so they went back 20 years and pulled a bunch of birth records from, I think, Massachusetts. They tabulated name and race, allowing the data to determine which names were most ‘black associated’ or ‘white associated’.

They then created a series of completely fictitious resumes, randomly assigned the names to them, and sent them in response to ‘Help Wanted’ ads up and down the East Coast. They used a voicemail system to track how many ‘callbacks’ each name generated. This completely removed any question of reaction to an actual person - it was just the names.

The ‘black associated’ names got about half the rate of callbacks that ‘white associated’ names got. That is just one of the hurdles.

But that’s not why I mention it. When I described this on the hunting forum, only ONE guy said, “Yeah, I can see that. I think I might do that, too, because I once had a bad experience with a black employee, so I find myself not wanting to risk hiring another.”

Everyone else’s response varied from, “You’re saying all hiring managers are racist!!” to “East Coast, huh? I guess Liberals are the REAL racists!” to “University of Chicago? They probably decided what result they wanted and faked the data!”

Complete denial of reality, because accepting it would mean that it really ISN’T a level playing field, which would mean there’s a reason why you need things like Affirmative Action.

Serious article despite the funny headline

Mutually Assured Derision

The State Department makes a hash of diplomacy.

the State Department’s fascination with social media reflects a view that its job is to speak over the heads of governments, or under their heads, or something. That is a dangerous illusion. With Ambassador [Michael] McFaul tweeting away in Russia as we were trying to reset the relationship, we saw some of the problems with digital diplomacy. The Youtube videos newly minted ambassadors make are downright embarrassing. They give an impression of proconsular self-regard which is in bad taste. Diplomacy is premised on a world of sovereign states. The State Department’s fascination with social media suggests that it no longer thinks that is the world we live in, a strange notion for a foreign ministry.

The longer it goes, the harder it gets to come to an equitable solution. What is the limit? 200 years? 500? Clinging to old grievances creates an ugly cycle of violence long past the time true reparations are possible.

I’d suggest we are wasting a lot of talent by not educating the children of the underclass well. I’m willing to pay more in taxes to expand educational opportunities from pre-K to college (including social services for families that currently need the older kids at home or out working or whatever) and in return, I don’t want to hear kids who work hard are “acting white” or disrespecting the culture.

There was a variation I saw a decade or so ago. This one pretended to be a remaking of Molloy’s ‘Dress for success’ work. But what they did was mix and match races in identical/equivalent clothing. Yes, black men in suits did better than white men in shirts with slacks and ties. But the devil was in details - the break line was significantly different from the reverse or even white to white or black to black.

(As an aside I recall trying to get the info for the alleged study as well. There are indicators that the numbers have shifted from when Molloy did his study, and I wanted to see what a properly done ‘Dress for Success in the 21st Century’ would look like.)

I’m leery of calling it a debt we owe, because that suggests an easy solution like reparations (“Here’s $10,000. Now we’re even.”) rather than acknowledging and comprehending the depth of the problem, and trying to find the solutions to it.

Did I ever own slaves? No. Was anyone who is currently alive ever a slave in America? No. So, do I owe a debt to the descendants of slaves?

BUT, I have benefitted all my life from being a white male in a society that favors people like me. I have “played the game on ‘Easy’”. while others may have had it on ‘Hero’.

“The assumption is that the BLM is part of the federal government. But we need to check the facts on that one. The BLM doesn’t work for the government: they work for the United Nations. They might as well be wearing blue helmets. If we find out there’s money being exchanged between Harry Reid and the Chinese government, no one should be surprised.”

A self-trained lawyer tells me the same. He adds that Bar-certified lawyers, like the ones who prosecuted Bundy, have sworn loyalty to the British government, whose statutes encourage sex with clients. “That’s what they do with all their clients.”
……..snip……..
…The crowd, fresh off their victory at the Battle of Bunkerville, gives Bundy a standing ovation. But he doesn’t seem pleased. He reproaches the crowd for failing to follow the word of God - to the letter - which he says is being delivered through him. They failed, for example, to follow his instructions to tear down the toll booths at Lake Mead and disarm the Park Service.

“The message I gave to you all was a revelation that I received. And yet not one of you can seem to even quote it.”

In good news regarding GA wingnuts, I have made (slight) liberal inroads (moohahahaha).

I have mentioned my “compound neighbors” here before, a large extended family, all armed, really super conservative. In the last week they’ve reached out to us(!) a few times, and I am stunned. They’re putting in a new driveway and landscaping and they offered me a bunch of plants that would have otherwise been dug up or paved over.

Then they have offered up tons of really kind and nice wishes and thoughts about my son, apologies for one of the kids who bullied him and wanted me to make sure my son knew he was welcome to come over and play with the dogs anytime he likes. So no, they aren’t voting Democratic anytime soon, but we’re no longer evildemonsatanworshippingdebilpeople. Winning hearts and minds slowly….

Further to my last post:

You will never get Conservatives to acknowledge the whole ‘Playing The Game On Easy’ concept because it undermines their belief that they are self-made, and solely responsible for their own success. I once told a Conservative that he and I had been fortunate to be able to become, with a lot of hard work, well-paid professionals. He insisted he wasn’t ‘fortunate’ at all! He’d worked hard for all of it!

It turned out, of course, that he was a middle class white kid whose parents had paid his way through college, and helped with law school.

But he wasn’t ‘fortunate’! No sirree!

We had a stray kitten turn up in our backyard (the one posted above, actually) on Sunday night; I took her up to the shelter yesterday because we can’t do another cat right now and I’m pretty sure she’ll be adopted out, etc., but it still broke my heart. :(

I bought my wife a little white kitten for a birthday some years ago, before we were married. Her dad refused to allow it into his house and my house already had 2 cats that I could barely manage. Thankfully the pet store let me bring it back, but still. It broke my heart to give it back.

It’s a tough split but not insurmountable. The progressive fringe is always susceptible to being drawn towards Ralf Nader-type spoilers. There is a serious effort (sites like Dkos) to push the Dems towards nominating unelectable loons but the party has done a decent job at resisting so far.

Democrats that vote and are out in the meat world aren’t even remotely similar to internet Democrats. There’s also a lot of internal divisions at Dkos and they’re not all on the same page on things as you might find at Fire Dog Lake. Markos himself has changed quite a bit over the years. If there is a Nader type spoiler it’s not going to be hatched from Dkos but Washington DC. The closest I can think of would be Sanders. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sanders be pragmatic enough to see the potentially negative consequences of repeating 2000. Sanders is very progressive but he’s not a crackpot like Nader.

You and me both. The real heartbreaker was giving up the daughter of Outdoor Cat, whom we tried to bring inside with our established (and fixed) male/female pair but kept peeing on everything. It wasn’t until much later that we realized it was the two females spraying, since we’d always been told that females didn’t spray.

I have to admit I hope that toxoplasmosis infection does not affect human behavior toward cats.

The effect of toxoplasmosis on rodent behavior is interesting.

Infection with T. gondii has been shown to alter the behavior of mice and rats in ways thought to increase the rodents’ chances of being preyed upon by cats. en.wikipedia.org

I had developed one over the years, and then I met my husband. And his cat.

After a few months, it pretty much went away. I was grateful, since I was having cats either way but constant anti-allergy meds would have been a pain.

Sanders is in a trap. He would have to become a democrat to challenge Clinton and he has already said this:

“I will not play a role of electing a right-winger,” Sanders said. “If, if, if you run as an independent, if the campaign is not going well, there comes a point where you can say ‘Well, you know what, I’m not going to elect a right-wing Republican.’ ”

Podesta too. Very well connected and influential, probably very progressive but still pragmatic. I suppose it would take someone influential or a well connected think tank to get a little too ambitious or power hungry and start pushing hard. It could happen but everybody’s behaving themselves so far.

re: #95 Skip Intro

Here’s the sign outside of his church.

The Civil War era and the Civil Rights era.

So I regard vehement anti-Federalism as basically neo-Confederacy with a thin veneer of deniability.

Friday afternoon fiber fest.

I ventured out today to do some camera practice, but spring hasn’t really fully sprung here in my neck of the woods. Winter lasted a LONG time this year.

Anyway, I’m still learning how to use all the manual settings as well as figuring out which lenses I prefer (after spending a small fortune, ugh). I found out that I really hate carrying a lot of gear around and/or trying to change lenses when the wind is blowing all kinds of crap into them.

I need to figure out which 2 or 3 lenses I want (read will actually use), and get rid of the rest. I love the 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens, the the bokeh is kinda “meh” (compared to the 85mm f/1.8). I’m pretty sure one of the things I’m gonna want is a dedicated macro—prolly the 100mm f/2.8.

I should probably look for a decent standard zoom with a wide aperture, preferably without having to go into the 1K+ L-Series lenses. Ugh.

Decisions, decisions… *sigh*

40mm, 1/125 sec at 3.2, ISO 100—I should’ve stopped it down farther as the depth of field was too shallow

I’m totally waiting for the dogwood tree down the street to bloom. I got a gorgeous shot of the blooms with my little Canon point & shoot six years ago, so I’m dying to try getting a few good shots with the DSLR.

EXACTLY. The first order of business is to win the election. ANY election. Every election possible. After that you can start worrying about checking off the wishlist. You need warm bodies in office that are at least sympathetic to your side first.

Markos knows this. He’s blogged about it for years. Just because some of his commenters are emoprogs and far left moonbats doesn’t mean he’s there with them. At the end of the day, he wants to win.

And we have to win. At this point, (D) vs. (R) really is more or less compromised politicians vs. out and proud evil-doers.

205 DKoch  Apr 25, 2014 5:44:53pm

re: #145 Gus

I like much of the writing and news aggregate on DKos, and there are a lot of good folks over there, but DKos is not reflective of the Party.

Just look at 2008 site poll:

48% Edwards
27% Obama
8% Clinton

When actual votes were cast in New Hampshire, Edwards ended a distant 3rd with 17% of the vote, while Hillary got 39% of the vote.

Edwards received 31 points less in New Hampshire than he did on Dkos. While Hillary received 31 points more in New Hampshire than Dkos. That’s a 62 point differential.

If there’s a statistical relationship between Daily Kos and actual Democratic Party voters, it’s an inverse relationship.

Every photo I have posted from the good camera?

It’s all with one lens.

I know there’s a *lot* to be said for a good prime, but when I travel I don’t want to carry all that shit with me and deal with changing lenses when it’s raining or whatever, so I skipped the kit lens and got a step up and …that’s it.

At some point I want to add a few more, but…

On the bright side, it can be pretty easy to sell the lenses for close to what you paid, I think.

The cell towers an antennas are weaponized …and you need to know when they are amped up and targeting you in your home.

So I just gridded the monocanvas for this new type of embroidery/needlework that I got to try after defending last year and am finally getting my act together to actually attempt. It looks a little more straightforward than cross stitch in some ways (which I would have started another project there today but I don’t like any of the linen I have on hand for that particular project).

On the flip side, there are a lot of fibers I have never worked with before and I kind of have no idea what I’m doing.

It should be fun.

I should probably look for a decent standard zoom with a wide aperture, preferably without having to go into the 1K+ L-Series lenses. Ugh.

Decisions, decisions… *sigh*

Patience padawan. Easy on the budget a minute.

I look at it like this. At times the next lens is a money trap. It takes me time to fully explore what a lens can do let alone 3. That having been said-I have come to these conclusions.

Prime=crisp. It pays to use your feet to compose. Low aperture#=cool bokeh. Tamron has surprisingly good performance for the money sometimes almost “L” series specs.
