re: #34 b_sharp

The gun culture, the idea that guns are no more than toasters, that the hero kills all the bad guys without harm to himself, the idea that guns are a solution to the bad guys but not a part of the problem is at the core of this. Limiting guns will soon not be possible because of technological advances such as 3D printers where anybody can print out their own guns.

Because of mandatory conscription and reserves duty, in both Israel and Switzerland guns can be found in virtually every home.

Yet there are far less of these kind of crimes in those places. Why? Because there is no equivalent to American gun culture.

The real culprits here are the NRA types who equate the right to bear arms as the consummate right of freedom. For generations, Americans have been led to believe anything short of the absolute and unequivocal right to have access to firearms will bring down the republic- and this is one of the cornerstones of the gun culture.

We romanticize the cowboy- both the Marshall and the loner who took the law into his own hands to administer frontier justice, as if somehow vigilante justice is the equivalent to real justice.

I could go on but you get the point.
