The corporate version of this phrase is “left to pursue other business interests” and everyone knows it means you were canned.

Best example of this ‘corporate speak’ I ever saw was when a thoroughly useless VP of HR was ‘promoted’ to a position reporting directly to the CEO, and his mission was ‘to articulate the critical cultural norm.’
