Exactly and I’ll concede that a lot of left wingers saw communism and the USSR as bulwarks the other way. But there’s no question that western conservatism lends itself to accepting totalitarianism if it’s done in the name of opposition to socialism and increasingly liberalism.
Fascism is a radically reactionary ideology, and conservatism certainly has a reactionary streak to it. It’s no surprise the two ideologies can work quite nicely together.
