If I remember correctly, it wasn’t until Chrysler was going belly up and Iacocca stepped up to the plate, and the government bailed out Chrysler, that the Detroit establishment began to get a clue that they really had to change. By then they were a couple of decades behind the Asian and European makers who were doing more with less.
