It’s not the number of comments, actually, it’s the amount of memory used. Threads with a lot of embedded tweets use much more memory because Twitter has recently changed their embed code quite a bit and they now use a lot more memory than before.

I have a 256G iPhone and it’s able to load longer threads without a problem, but a lot of mobile devices have much less memory available.
