I owned an older, early 60’s bug when I was a teen in high school. The heater boxes rotted out, you froze to death without a gas heater, died in a head on crash, and the stock engine left something to be desired. But it was cheap to run, great in the snow, and was fun to drive. And you would never ever be able to pass a Caddy or muscle car. They would not allow it. Except in the snow as you waved to them as you flew on by.

My dad used VW combis as work truck/family car from 1959 to ‘75 or so. So I grew up with VW bus in the garage. All you say is true, but the mofos were reliable. Our last bus was a ‘68 camper (no popup roof, though). Dad kept it running until rust finally got its way, and the sliding door would no longer stay in its rails. I think he sold it to a neighborhood kid in ‘75 who wanted to repair it.
