“Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees.” I remember that, too. But I was a kid then, and I didn’t learn until later that they were a fake.

I remember Paul McCartney talking about how when the Fab Four first heard of the Monkees. Paul said that they were worried, from what they heard, that these guys could be the next Beatles.

When the eventually did get to meet the Monkees and see them in action, Ringo is said to have quipped, “These guys aren’t the next Beatles! They’re the next Marx Brothers!”
