knives are neuter, but turnips are feminine.

I once overheard a colleague talking on the phone “I found him this morning, he fell in the creek and was lying there all night”

When I asked who the poor fellow was who spent all night in the creek, she explained that she was talking about her house key, der Schlssel, which is masculine
