You’re ignoring one of the single biggest drivers of improvements across the South - the TVA. That, in turn helped provide the power needed to get the Manhattan Project underway (Oak Ridge was located due to its proximity to power, just as Hanford in WA was in close proximity to the dams on the Columbia River).

And leading three men on a cross-country trek to recover treasure before a new dam project flooded the area.
