You know, if anyone truly holds religious convictions down deep —and lives by them, they are probably not a bad person —regardless of the religion.

The message from (IIRC) any religion I’ve studied is the same:

Treat others as you wish to be treated and the reverses
Do not do to others what offends you.

That would be true if the religious convictions in question are good, like the golden rule example you gave.

However, there are any number of religions whose teachings are not so good, such as Wingnut Christianity, and no amount of sincerity in holding these beliefs will make them any better.
