I would use cold-cock the way I’d use sucker punch. Blind siding someone.

(This is more fun than working.) Note that a “cold call” is an unexpected call, by a salesperson or someone. Other than that, I am drawing on my deep investigation of Dashiell Hammett and Leslie Charteris and Sapper and other important writers of my early youth. Possibly even Robert Parker.

That said, sucker punch is clearly what I should have used.
