Your friend is confused. If he likes dry, there are plenty of choices out there! One of the best every day wines (about$10-12/bottle) is Dancing Bull Zinfandel. For those that like a wine that is a bit bolder than a Cab, try a Malbec (which is from Argentina).

If you want to get a real feel for what they mean when they say “spicy” or “peppery” in wine, try Casillero Del Diablo (Concha y Toro) Carmenere. WARNING: Pop the cork and let this bottle sit at least 1 hour before drinking - best if left to breathe for about 2 hours.
