OK, I have a confession to make.

I recently ended up in possession of two bottles of wine -- both were house-gifts for an event I hosted.

I just looked them both up online -- one was a $14 bottle of wine. The other, a classy $60 bottle of wine.

Meanwhile, I already had at home a $3 bottle of low-grade cooking wine -- which i indeed only use for cooking, since I'm not really a drinker.

Well, circumstances compelled me recently to open (but not finish) the two new-ish bottles, to serve guests. And so, just now, since I needed some wine for a sauce I'm making, I had all three open bottles in front of me -- so I tried a blind taste test of the three bottles.

The result?

They all freakin' tasted the same!

To my plebian palate, I could not tell any qualitative difference between the three.

As far as I'm concerned, wine is nothing more then spoiled grape juice.

Often with wine, the money you pay is for the import costs. Getting a bottle of wine from Italy or France to the U.S. (especially the West Coast) is very expensive.

Wine is one of those things... you can pay out of the nose for absolute crap, or spend next to nothing for sublime greatness. The only way to get around in the world of wine is to do hundreds of hours of research.

Or know someone who has already done that research.

Quick question zombie. Did you eat a piece of bread between sampling the wines? Did you use a fresh glass for each? Small things like that can totally change the tasting experience. Went to a winery this past October and tasted three wines. All drank from the same glass. Needless to say the first one tasted the best.

/friend of mine won't even touch American wines, they taste too sweet and fruity.

Some fine wine retailers offer wine tastings and classes- in Cali, I'm sure there are even wineries that might have something like this. There's differences in grapes, and additional flavoring come from the aging process.

Really want to pick up on the difference in wine? Go get two bottles of Chardonnay- one french, one American. If that doesn't do it, nothing will. Just remember to cleanse the pallet.

Dave Barry on wine:

The wine is then bottled and transported to the Pretentious Phrase Room, where professional wine snots perform the most critical part of the whole operation: thinking of ways to make fermented grape juice sound more complex than nuclear physics. For example, at one winery, I sampled a Pinot Noir (from the French words ''pinot,'' meaning ''type of,'' and ''noir,'' meaning ''wine'') and they handed me a sheet of paper giving many facts about the wine, including something called the ''Average Brix at Harvest''; the pH of the grapes; a detailed discussion of the fermentation (among other things, it was ''malolactic''); the type of barrels used for aging (''100 percent French tight-grained oak from the Vosges and Allier forests''); the type of filtration (it was ``a light egg-white fining''); and, of course, the actual nature of the wine itself, which is described -- and this is only part of the description -- as having ``classical Burgundian aromas of earth, bark and mushrooms; dried leaves, cherries; subtle hints of spice and French oak''; and, of course, the flavor of ``blackberry, allspice, cloves, vanilla with nuances of plums and toast.''

Yes! Nuances of toast! I bet they exchanged high fives in the Pretentious Phrase Room when they came up with that one!

At another winery, I stood next to some young men -- they couldn't have been older than 22 -- who were tasting wine and making serious facial expressions and asking a winery employee questions such as: ''Was '93 a good year for the cabernets?'' I wanted to shake them and shout, 'What's WRONG with you!? When I was your age, I was drinking Sunshine Premium brand beer (motto: `Made From Ingredients') at $2.39 a CASE!''

Needless to say, these young men also had cigars. You have to worry about where this nation is headed.

Read the whole thing. :)

If I had 100 hours a day to do everything I want and need to do, I'd write an essay about how Hamas and other terror groups have intentionally put Israel in a modern version of the "Sophie's Choice" dilemma, forcing israel to make an impossible decision between two unacceptable alternatives. Either way you go, you'll be criticized.

If Hamas is using children and UN schools as human shields, then Israel must either lie down and commit national suicide, or kill innocent civilians when they target the terrorists.

As far as I'm concerned, I blame the people who set up the Sophie's Choice dilemma (Hamas) in the first place, not the person who was forced to decide (Israel).

re: #93 BlueCanuck

Your friend is confused. If he likes dry, there are plenty of choices out there! One of the best every day wines (about$10-12/bottle) is Dancing Bull Zinfandel. For those that like a wine that is a bit bolder than a Cab, try a Malbec (which is from Argentina).

If you want to get a real feel for what they mean when they say "spicy" or "peppery" in wine, try Casillero Del Diablo (Concha y Toro) Carmenere. WARNING: Pop the cork and let this bottle sit at least 1 hour before drinking - best if left to breathe for about 2 hours.

Quick question zombie. Did you eat a piece of bread between sampling the wines? Did you use a fresh glass for each? Small things like that can totally change the tasting experience. Went to a winery this past October and tasted three wines. All drank from the same glass. Needless to say the first one tasted the best.

Well, to be frank, I just swigged them all straight from the bottles.

The soil the wine grapes were grown in also has a huge impact, which is why I suggested a french vs. American Chard. You'll taste it.

Depends on where it is grown.

There are only a few real places where Terrior exists.

In real world terms, the wines of Washington State and France are grown on the same latitude and the same weather and environment. They are nearly indistinguishable in taste and complexity. It really comes down to personal preference, some of the most respected sommeliers in the world would not be able to give a definitive answer on which region was better.

Subtle differences in the type of grape, the weather and soil it grew in, the yeast, the way its fermented, racked, clarified, aged, casks, bottling and corks can all lead to huge differences in taste and price. Sometimes some cheap wines are very good and sometimes expensive wines are not fit for swine.

In light of whats happening in Gaza, I wanted to go back and read what Obama's foreign policy adviser Samantha Power said back in 2002 about placing a military presence in Israel to oversee a peace agreement.

...what we need is a willingness to put something on the line in helping the situation. Putting something on the line might mean alienating a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import; it may more crucially mean sacrificing—or investing, I think, more than sacrificing—billions of dollars, not in servicing Israel’s military, but actually investing in the new state of Palestine, in investing the billions of dollars it would probably take, also, to support what will have to be a mammoth protection force, not of the old Rwanda kind, but a meaningful military presence. Because it seems to me at this stage (and this is true of actual genocides as well, and not just major human rights abuses, which were seen there), you have to go in as if you’re serious, you have to put something on the line.Unfortunately, imposition of a solution on unwilling parties is dreadful. It’s a terrible thing to do, it’s fundamentally undemocratic. But, sadly, we don’t just have a democracy here either, we have a liberal democracy.

On Israel: Keep pounding HAMAS and anyone that gets in the way. Don't give in. Stick your proverbial fingers in your national ears and ignore the rest of the world (except those that are in full support of your actions). Tell them to shut the "bleep" up. If it were HAMAS in Europe's backyard bombing the crap out their neighborhoods, the snobbist elites of the E.U. wouldn't be screaming "ceasefire" to Israel.

On wine: we buy this big 40 lb'er from Costco. $8.99. Can't remember the name but it has an X in it. Think it's from Chile. Great tasting and cheap! I believe it's a blend.

I live just a very short distance from the Napa Valley. And yet the wine that was all the way from Italy was the $14 bottle, and a bottle from a vineyard in Napa I could visit in person in under an hour was $60.

You explain it.

Napa is the France of American Wine producing regions. You will find many incredible vintages, but the name itself carries a price tag. In reality, the vast majority of wines produced are average (obviously), but when a particular region or winery makes a name for itself with a GREAT wine, they milk that for profit as long as possible.

A great example: Dom Perignon. Not even close to the greatest Champaign (a sparkling wine from the region in France of the same name). But because they had a few AWESOME years, people will still overpay for it. You are better off getting a Barefoot Winery California sparkling wine Brut Cuvee for about $10 a bottle (instead of Dom's $140).

2 Buck Chuck

Used to be $1.99 at Trader Joe's, although the last time I bought some, inflation had kicked in at it's now $2.99. Drinkable Cabernet and Merlot.

Malbec from Argentina is tasty, so is Tempranillo...even the cheap stuff tastes pretty good. I love a red from Spain called Borsao Campo de Borja, it's a Garnacha and has a deep flavor.

Napa, of course is a great area, but try wines from Paso Robles and Sonoma area of Calif.

Fetzter makes a nice (and cheap)Gewurztraminer if you like whites but can't take the Chardonnay.

I can drink the pricey stuff, but WHY?

I recommend these wines

I can speak for three of them.

The Petite Syrah is an absolute charmer and will please the most unsophisticated palates. *ahem* A good guzzling wine, or what I like to refer to as a good breakfast wine.

I tend to favor the zinfandel, which is very robust and deep in character, with great legs. Hey. I'm a leg man.

The Cabernet Sauvignon is far more complex and really deserves to be paired with food. But you don't have to get too snotty about it. Uncork it and order your favorite pizza.

I've tried the Pinot Grigio once, but wasn't blown away. It's on my list to try again.

If Israel sent teams into Europe to start protecting Jews the elites would face their ultimate nightmare. They can't force Israel and there bluff is hollow. Israel can beat the Europeans without the US weighing in and as a nuclear power no one can force Israel to swallow an existential threat. The inability of the Europeans to face down and control threats from their domestic but undomesticated terrorists, moslem or anarcho-communist depends on everyone else supporting the myth of their sovereignty even as they try to offload it to transnational and unelected organs like the EU and UN. If Israel refuses to play along the house of cards could collapse. I ecpect much bluster and panic from the elites.

This is almost funny considering in the last thread someone (can't remember) was saying that the Palis should ask Japan and Germany what real relentless bombing felt like.

Guess they don't remember.

Something else about imported wine. There are still a number of holdover laws from prohibition that prevent some wholesalers and importers from selling in certain markets. I worked for one retailer who got into importing wines himself to get around some of the rules, which really cut out the middle men and made for great wines and cheap prices. You can find great french and italian wines for cheap depending on where you look and the laws the liquor industry has to work with in your area. Good wine does not have to be expensive.

Another tip- when working with a wine sales person at your local fine wine retailer- they should be asking about your taste and budget and finding you the wines to match. If your wine seller is pushing wines on you your not really looking for, then they are not doing their job.

342 Syrah  Tue, Jan 6, 2009 7:13:18pm

re: #298 Noam Sayin'

Yum. . . .

I like to go into the wine section and select something I have never tried before. Price is not that much of a problem anymore. There are so many good wines that are priced very reasonably nowadays.

Palate.

My one wine fact.

What are they all wining about?
When I shop for wine, I walk into the liquor store, choose the cheapest bottle of wine in the store, and enjoy gingerly sipping it by candlelight, usually without barfing or getting a migraine.
Not only that, but I can leave an opened bottle in the fridge for a week and then enjoy drinking it "old and cold".
Call me a luddite but I feel very fortunate to possess a lifeless palate.

re: #343 Iron Fist

Men, this stuff that some sources sling around about America wanting out of this war, not wanting to fight, is a crock of bullshit. Americans love to fight, traditionally. All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle.

You are here today for three reasons. First, because you are here to defend your homes and your loved ones. Second, you are here for your own self respect, because you would not want to be anywhere else. Third, you are here because you are real men and all real men like to fight. When you, here, every one of you, were kids, you all admired the champion marble player, the fastest runner, the toughest boxer, the big league ball players, and the All-American football players. Americans love a winner. Americans will not tolerate a loser. Americans despise cowards. Americans play to win all of the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American.

You are not all going to die. Only two percent of you right here today would die in a major battle. Death must not be feared. Death, in time, comes to all men. Yes, every man is scared in his first battle. If he says he's not, he's a liar. Some men are cowards but they fight the same as the brave men or they get the hell slammed out of them watching men fight who are just as scared as they are. The real hero is the man who fights even though he is scared. Some men get over their fright in a minute under fire. For some, it takes an hour. For some, it takes days. But a real man will never let his fear of death overpower his honor, his sense of duty to his country, and his innate manhood.

Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best and it removes all that is base. Americans pride themselves on being He Men and they ARE He Men. Remember that the enemy is just as frightened as you are, and probably more so. They are not supermen.

The British drink a lot of ales, these are brewed with top fermenting yeast at room temperature. Lagers on the other hand are brewed with lager yeast which are bottom fermenting and prefer a much lower temperature. That difference has as much to do with drinking temperature as the quality of the ingredients.

Well my point was that Israel, much like the U.S. in Iraq, is trying to stop the terrorism and despotism in the most humane and indirect way possible. Yet it matters very little to the so-called "Arab street" and "anti-war movement" which is perfectly OK with Hamas and Hezbollah using the exact same language to achieve its ends (total subjugation). There are reasons why the U.S. and Israel have not resorted to the most frightful of their military capabilities. It probably has to do with the innate belief that if there is just one Iraqi or one Palestinian who believes in a freedom and liberty, that person is worth saving.

Don't get out much with the kids, but yes the Dragontooth, for some reason haven't had it in awhile. Just an oversight on my part.

Maryland. You have to have it shipped to a liquor store or distributor.

I had a customer who visited regularly from NYC who always bought 4 bottles of the same wine. I asked him one day why, and he told me he couldn't get that wine in NYC. I was stunned- I thought anything was available in NYC. But I later came to learn about the crazy import laws- made it impossible for the wholesalers, distributors and retailers. So- he bought his favorite wine in another state. Crazy.

I've dealt with some of those laws myself. There's a handful of states that prohibit interstate shipping, for example like Texas and Florida.

It just angers me sometimes. We have fantastic wines up here in the NW, and want to spread the love far and wide. Yet the same people that want to get their wines out, don't want other wines in.

Then there are just unfortunate circumstances. Like a great winery, Olympic Cellars, named for the Olympic mountain range. They were served with a Cease and Desist notice from the IOC for using the word Olympic in their exported wine.

Good evening. I am sitting in the kitchen with a hot cup of chamomile tea, I ran away from watching Israeli TV. I was sobbing..the stories of the IDF casualties, the mothers being interviewed on TV, talking about their sons in Gaza, and now a story about one of the kids who was killed-a Palestinian and I am so upset...the kid Ahmad was taken to an Israeli hospital in Beersheva and I think is brain dead and they filmed the moment where they told his sister and even though I know they are terrorist supporters who would kill me in a minute and dance on my blood I am angry at myself for feeling sad, which is what the terrorists are counting on. I am so distraught. I just think of my kids and those moms with their sons in Gaza and I am bawling again. I am out of it. I tried to give husband a pep talk saying THAT'S WHAT THEY DEPEND ON, that we feel-we hurt for their kids, but that they would kill us for Allah in a split second. I'm a mess.

The internet is notorious for outrageous behaviors. It is as if the anonymity of the net allows people to let their inner id run wild, giving themselves license to say and do things to one another on the net that they would never dream of doing in the real face-to-face everyday world outside of the net.

No- I couldn't imagine you'd like JB or JD- you're more discriminating than that.

I'm a vodka girl, but I do enjoy a nip of good Irish whiskey now and again.

re: #481 Dark_Falcon

That is vile. If the IDF catches any Hamas terrorist doing such a thing, the scum should simply be lined up and shot. No trial, no nothing. You used children as shields and you are a waste of oxygen.

There's a great scene in Iron Man when the hero goes to a town in Afghanistan. The terrorists are holding up little children to protect themselves. You see the computer interface targeting the terrorists' heads, then these guns come out of his shoulders... It's all over very neatly, with precise targeting.

At the risk of sounding like a moonbat, I don't think the article is all that far off. I say that as someone who is getting ready to start a greenhouse up, and has seen the effects that artificial vs. natural light will have on starting a plant. "Care" must be taken to provide the right type of light, the intensity, and the duration when starting plants, and it affects final yield of fruit.
"Light Pollution" is also easy to understand if you've ever been a country boy.

I grew up country. But I love the city. I'm not saying this article is bogus. I just need resources in order to tell if it's bogus. But you're talking about plants photosynthesizing, in which case much light is preferable, provided the spectrum is right.

I haven't gotten far, but the article makes a premise about retinal exposure to photons having an effect on circadian rhythms. But their research is just starting, so I'm likely to think, 'meh.'

I'd alert all my buddies that registration is open, but heck, they all voted for 0bama and are blinded by his light (sic). Do you guys have any idea how difficult it is to just talk about travel, wine, clothes and celebrities? Good grief.

Sorry, Newbie. We do occasionally discuss wine here. Hope we didn't bore you to tears.

hello lizards,
cheers to your beachhead against the madness in the media.

I hate light pollution. I remember the great blackout we had a few summers back. The night sky never looked so beautiful here. I could take that every so often in the summer. Not in the winter though.

Actually it's probably sulfite compounds- by product of some fermentation processes. They are why women who are with child should not drink wine.

Also, If you are allergic to Sulfa. Don't drink wines with sulfates.

If you had seen the show that I just saw, you would be reduced to tears. And I really mean it.

I so understand how you feel, after seeing the videos the last few days, the horror for the children just encompassed me....I could hardly function....I had to just step away. I don't think good, decent people can ever understand the evil....lets just hope we can fight it and WIN.

Sharmuta - actually not a newbie. I've been registered since 2004 usually lurking on a regular basis and seldom posting.

And BTW, I love a good wine. One of my favorites right now is a zin called "Earthquake."
