A lot of people forget this, but the early 1990s were the peak of the rise in violent crime that started in the 1950s. Many in the Black community were calling for harsh sentences for dealers selling crack cocaine, which was leading to ‘Black genocide’ in the words of a number of black leaders. “Superpredators” was a term which, I think, originated in the Social Sciences to describe the violence of street gangs of the era.

Since that time we have seen s drop in violent crime, just as unexpected as was the original rise. Was it, as some researchers have suggested, leaded gasoline, depositing lead most in those neighborhoods which saw the highest rise in crime? It’s a solid hypothesis, with both correlative data and a mechanism of action for both the rise and fall.

Overall, though, it’s reasonable to say that we as a society overreacted, and that a rational society corrects itself.

But given that Bernie voted for the damn bill, why is it only Hillary who’s being held accountable for it?

That’s what stumps me.
