Well, there is the TV-b-gone device that looks like a key fob, but has a button on it you hold down. It cycles through all the infrared combinations for “off” for all brands of televisions. In a few seconds of holding it in a way others cannot see it (below a table perhaps), it will shut off the television.

If someone turns it on, you just do it again. Eventually they will give up thinking it is the TV that is not working.

It is very effective here in a place where every restaurant and bar plays FOX News Channel (the reason the device was developed).
