Of course a huge unspoken assumption is the idea that helping the Romans is a good thing in the first place.

Sidestepping the problems of the powers that be is education. Teach math - introduce proper numbers and double row accounting. Plant the seeds of calculus. Teach economics and banking. Teach physics and chemistry and muse on how much _power_ there is in flowing water turning a wheel and a mill or a trip hammer or blowing air through a coke fire to melt large quantities of iron with just the right amount of carbon left behind. The kids who become leaders armed with knowledge that no one else has? That will take care of the rest of it.
