Interesting I had no idea. Historical fiction though cool. I read The Age of Innocence which is set in that time period you’re talking about. For me, I want to write a historical novel set immediately following one of the two World Wars. I imagine the war still had a big effect over the lives of people i nteh 1870’s which is right around when my great grandparents on my dad’s side were born and they with few exceptions were the first Americans in their family. Plus as you know reconstruction only officially ended in 1876.

The piece is set in California, and two of the main characters grew up there, but the third is from the East originally, and her parents were active abolitionists. Very interesting research. (My mother thinks she must have been at that party that Matthew Broderick is at in the opening scenes of Glory).
