It says she was diagnosed more than three years ago; ACA hadn’t kicked in yet. The first year or more of her treatment was probably out of pocket. Even if insurance covered it, there’s traveling back and forth and her parents taking time off work (my dad had the same treatment in 1992 — it was only offered in San Francisco, it needs an MRI and a supercomputer and an elaborate array of thingmajigs that shoot two-molecules-wide radiation beams from sixteen different directions all to the same target point…)
