Yeah. I never heard of any baseball or football fan getting roughed up because he was wearing the “wrong” jersey. Or rooting for the “wrong” team. And as far as I see, terrorists love to kill Futball Fans. I could bring up other terrorist organizations, but I’ll just bring one up. The National Review just pissed on about a billion people. That is quite an achievement. Stay classy morons.

The NRO is not as floridly psychotic as Glenn Beck et al.

I’m willing to regard this as a distinction without a difference at this point.

Just like eating halaal food, playing soccer turns you into a muslim.

“Kill the Umpire.”

Sounds like a terroristic threat against the appointed authority of the game to me.

Most people who’d be ticked off by that article will never know it was written. National Review is not well known outside of the US and it is effectively unknown outside of the Anglosphere.

That’s not to suggest its a good article. It’s not: It’s over the top and needlessly hostile. It’s being seen by few non-Americans doesn’t make it better.

I’ll just re-post these here because they demonstrate the idiocy and blindness displayed, as usual, from NRO:

Soccer is the sport of terrorists. Therefore, soccer should be included as a check off for profiling potential terrorist suspects.

19 Dark_Falcon  Jun 16, 2014 7:04:07pm

Actually, I think its more the ‘fan culture’ of places rather than the sport itself: US and Canadian soccer fans are fairly well behaved compared to some places in Europe. Which isn’t to say US fans can’t get rowdy, but we very seldom riot over sports.

Weren’t NRO the guys who came up with the “terrorist fist bump”, too ? Or was it the “terrorist fist jab” ? I mean when Pres. Obama gave Michelle a fist-bump greeting on stage.

Clearly it was an homage to the WWF’s Mean Street Posse and their trademark “gimme some” slogan/action.

Terrorist fist bump ? Terrorist soccer ? Seriously, is it some kind of advanced parody ? Is it tongue-in-cheek, delivered with such consistency that it makes you wonder, “are they serious?” The journalist might be the same guy who successfully bought tickets to an airlines flight under the names “Terry Wrist” and “al kyder”, then had the airlines page the aforementioned individuals to “pick up their bags”, or something ! Surely they’re joking ?

Jerry Sandusky Scandal: Rioting Penn State Students Lost Sight of Real Bad Guy

It was a foolish and idiotic action indeed. When I worked for Marcus Evans, one of the quotes on the wall was by Joe Paterno. It took some doing, but me and some others there were able to point out that the quote, which praised such qualities as loyalty and confidence, ought not to have been there any longer, as Joe Paterno had shown he did not really believe in the qualities he had publicly championed. Instead he had covered up the violation of young boys in order to gain money and avoid damage to his reputation.

It was in that way just that the exposure of Sandusky left the reputation Paterno had lied to protect in ruins. After the final report on the disgusting matter was released, my then-employer had the Paterno quote painted over

10-Cent Beer Night

Don’t forget that time in Chicago where they tried to “kill disco”, with the rock DJ getting people to bring in all their disco records into the game. They put them in a box, and blew them up, leaving a crater in the outfield. The game got going again - but then quickly turned into a riot.

I don’t remember the name of the incident, but it was similar to the 10 cent beer night. That is, pretty ill conceived, and ending with violence and riots.

ahh, that’s right ! Disco Demolition Night. What a brilliant idea that turned out to be ! Well - to be fair, I heard an interview with the DJ, he said he did his job, he packed the stadium out via the promotion. Plus, he didn’t know the fans would riot. It was a classic failure to think things through. White Sox management failed to remember just how rowdy Steve Dahl’s fans were likely to be after drinking beer all throughout the first game. And Dahl knew fow to get a crowd going:

This is now officially the world’s largest anti-disco rally! Now listen—we took all the disco records you brought tonight, we got ‘em in a giant box, and we’re gonna blow ‘em up reeeeeeal goooood.

And lastly, some of it was just what has caused Chicago at times to be referred to as the Wicked City. Or in the words of corrupt alderman Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna: “Chicago ain’t no sissy town!” I do say that with no small bit of affection as some of the rowdiness gives Chicago its character, and if it were all removed Chicago would be somewhat poorer from its absence*.

*: As long as no one gets badly hurt or killed, of course.

Anti-Muslim bigotry has become a huge problem in Myanmar, but those in government are either ignoring it or fanning the flames. The reason is that Muslims in that nation are seen as interlopers from Bangladesh, and because it provides a convenient distraction from real issues that said officials want to resolve to their own benefit.

It does need to be noted here that Islam came to the Eastern India-Bangladesh-Myanmar area as the religion of conquerors, but that should not matter too much today. Today’s Muslims in that region are in no way to blame for the actions of their ancestors. I mention this because the manner in which Islam arrived in Myanmar is part of the justification claimed for attacking it in that nation. That justification is a crock.

I think you have to grow up on baseball to appreciate it. Not knocking you here in the slightest. I just think baseball is one of those things that if you grow up playing and or watching it as I did that you’re more likely to enjoy it. Soccer is something I’ve come to appreciate because I really like how even the smallest areas have teams and it’s intriguing to me how one’s team of choice can be tied to their socio-cultural identity. I also like how there’s virtually no commercials and appreciate the agility of the athletes. Now the one sport I’ve never gotten into is golf. That to me is the snoozefest.

I don’t know if it has been mentioned (I am not caught up with the thread!) There was also the Cleveland Indians baseball team’s 10 Cent Beer Night at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium back in the late 70s. The fastest way to get me to do anything else is to put golf on TV. It’s right up there with bowling and curling in terms of boring me to tears. Even watching those televised poker tournaments is more interesting.

Baseball is more fun when you’re actually there. Part of the fun of a baseball game is the overpriced hot dogs and sodas and getting together with friends. The actual game itself is almost secondary. Baseball on TV? Zzzzzzz.

Yeah baseball’s definitely something that’s more fun live but I do like watching it on TV. I think it helps that I played for close to a decade and have a large knowledge of the game. But yeah golfing, bowling, and curling are just snoozefests. Don’t get the point of even showing those on TV. Another one that bores me is auto racing. Just doesn’t do it for me.

There are some sports that are just more fun when you do them. Watching them (unless you’re an avid player), not so much.

Here in China, the national sports channel, CCTV5, plays almost every sport possible: snooker, curling, ping pong, basketball, golf, soccer, badminton, tennis, sometimes F1 — but not NASCAR, baseball or American football.

Damn Commies!!

I like baseball for background entertainment while doing other stuff. You can just be motoring along and all of a sudden you hear the crack of the bat, or a crowd roar, or the talking head going nuts and then you watch or listen. Every once in a while you turn and look at the score. It’s been said it is the true hot summer sport…slow and languid, just like the pace of the hot humid days in the sun.

Hated hearing about Tony today. He went in the HoF with my childhood hero, Ripken. 54 is too damn young. Great guy. I remember loving when him and Cal went in together since these were two guys that spent their whole career with the same team and for them to do that in the age of free agency was really impressive.

Top level Formula One auto racing is very much like any high tech industry. It has aspects of auto manufacture, airplane/aerodynamics, space exploration technology, etc. Some teams are 100 employees strong. The driver is the pilot…pushing limits like any test pilot.

At one time, Indycar racing in America was getting on that level, but that all changed and like mentioned for NASCAR is now spec racing too. NASCAR is American reality entertainment racing. It has it niche, but expensive cars is not it. It’s about the drivers and drama.

I find soccer a bit boring. Long stretches where basically nothing is actually happening.

Baseball? I have to fight sleep to see one game.

In baseball, any pitch can turn into a home run. Having said that, I prefer a pitcher’s duel anyday of the week.
There are a couple of things that confound me about soccer. A goal kick is almost uniformly blasted about 75 yards down the field, and is effectively a jump ball. What that tells me is that the 50/50 chance of recovering the goal kick downfield is still better the odds of bringing the ball up yourself (like you might see in hockey). And is spite of the fact that the goal is as big as a barn, it’s almost impossible to score a goal when the game is played the way it should be. I like defense but this is ridiculous.
My daughter was an excellent goalie because she wore a fluorescent green shirt and the other time unfailingly kicked the ball right into her chest!

Actually they likely would not. Their money is in the refining of petrochemicals, for the most part and if they aren’t refining Iraqi oil then this wouldn’t effect them too much.

Moreover, the lead Republicans trying to get America to launch air strikes on ISIS are John McCain and Lindsey Graham, neither of whom are within the same orbit as Charles and David Koch. Which is not to say that Americans for Prosperity didn’t help fund Graham’s primary campaign, but on an issue like this both of those two senators will commit of their own volition.

Here’s the article’s logic: The world has lots of serious problems. Soccer is globally popular. Therefore, soccer must have something to do with how fucked up the world is.

The author doesn’t even know shit about the sport. He ridicules it for being so long (“all 12 hours of a soccer match”). Actually, all 4 American pro team sports have longer games…usually much longer. A non-overtime soccer match is always less than two hours, because there are no timeouts. Even an OT game is almost always less than 3 hours. Which makes soccer shorter than all football games, and most baseball, hockey and basketball games.

But who can expect an author to do such extensive research?

And I think the author is trying to be funny, but nearly all his soccer “jokes” were much funnier 35 years ago when we first heard them.

Seriously, did either of those guys ever meet a war he didn’t like?

Their constant banging of war drums over nearly everything has become counterproductive, even laughable at times when they claim catastrophe will occur if we don’t attack X, then make the same argument the next week about Y, then the following week about Z. Most people have caught on that their predictions of Armageddon are slightly exaggerated. They’ve turned themselves into little boys crying wolf.

The Assange-ish character turns out is a bad guy. Definitely, incontrovertibly, EEEVIL. He’s conspiring with the CIA station chief to sell American secrets to China… then got the CIA station chief to frame one of his agents for it. And to try to kill another of his agents who’s about to figure it out. Also, Assange avatar is using/manipulating/betraying Snowdon avatar.

The President gave in to the terrorist demands. They’ve droned London with four missiles already, they have several more drones (with four missiles each) on the way, unless the President gives himself up to be killed in reprisal for droning the terrorist’s husband last year. And the President does it. (First he signs a resignation letter, so he won’t be killed in office. And a few minutes before that, he signed a pardon for Jack for the stuff Jack did that’s had him on the run since the series previously aired.)

President Heller is played by the same actor who was President Hayes on Stargate. Which is about the umpteenth reason someone must write a novel-length crossover 24/SG fanfic.

Chloe Snowdon Lisbeth is still awesome. Audrey is still irritating. Framed Agent’s Wife is Jack’s helper monkey, highly competent but a bit of a whiner. Jack’s other helper monkey, the Bosnian War Criminal, was useful in the early eps, hasn’t been seen for a couple of hours, but I’m assuming he’s Chekhov’s Rifle On The Mantle. And then he’ll die.

There’s four hours left.

Jack is still always right. People who don’t believe him, or are even a little bit skeptical, will regret it. And when he tortures somebody, it’s the right person every time and they give up the information immediately.

Kiefer Sutherland is still the sexiest man on television.

That pretty much nails it; most of the problems with rioting football fans here in Europe can be put right on the doorstep of the Ultras. There was a small-scale riot here in Ostrava a month or so back, and again, it was the handiwork of Ostrava Banik (the name of the local club) Ultras.

I’ll go to a game when the weather’s nice - it’s a nice way to get out of the house - but I’m very selective as to which games I’ll attend. I will avoid like the plague any match between Ostrava Banik and Praha Sparta, because if there’s gonna be a riot, that’s where it will start, as the Ultras from both teams tend to show up owing to a hardcore rivalry.

And, morning all.

They’re becoming too regular. And they’re being done by idiots who are doing their cause more harm than good. There is no reason for anyone anywhere to go grocery shopping or whatever with a long gun openly strapped to their body. This isn’t Somalia, for fuck’s sake.

I’ve seen the open carry morons here in Austin walking around with their flags and their AR-15s strapped to their bodies. They look like tools. And none of them can offer a logical explanation for why they need their penis extension on full display for the rest of us to see. What are they going to do if someone mugs them? Open fire on a public street with a high powered rifle? There’s no guarantee that whoever they’re aiming at will stand still, or that their body would stop the bullet. If they hit anyone else, it’s on them.

If you want to protect yourself and you feel the need to have a gun, get a concealed carry license. Open carry is just stupid.

Why have a police force when everyone is permitted to carry around a weapon like that?

And it eventually deteriorates into chaos.

re: #159 Dr Lizardo

Yes, I remember reading about the “ultras” when Ukraine first erupted.

Just another manifestation of the frustrated “alpha male” syndrome, I think.

It says she was diagnosed more than three years ago; ACA hadn’t kicked in yet. The first year or more of her treatment was probably out of pocket. Even if insurance covered it, there’s traveling back and forth and her parents taking time off work (my dad had the same treatment in 1992 — it was only offered in San Francisco, it needs an MRI and a supercomputer and an elaborate array of thingmajigs that shoot two-molecules-wide radiation beams from sixteen different directions all to the same target point…)

True enough, but with the disaster film genre, I sort of expect laughable dialogue and utterly implausible situations.

I like what Roger Ebert wrote in his review for 2012;

It’s not so much that the Earth is destroyed, but that it’s done so thoroughly. “2012,” the mother of all disaster movies (and the father, and the extended family) spends half an hour on ominous set-up scenes (scientists warn, strange events occur, prophets rant and of course a family is introduced) and then unleashes two hours of cataclysmic special events hammering the Earth relentlessly.

This is fun. “2012” delivers what it promises, and since no sentient being will buy a ticket expecting anything else, it will be, for its audiences, one of the most satisfactory films of the year. It even has real actors in it. Like all the best disaster movies, it’s funniest at its most hysterical. You think you’ve seen end-of-the-world movies? This one ends the world, stomps on it, grinds it up and spits it out.

That pretty much nailed it. I miss Roger Ebert’s reviews, which were insightful and often quite humorous.

re: #163 Justanotherhuman

Thank you for posting that. There is a lot there and I tend to have a short attention span, but I have been practicing this for years:

2. Cultivate mutual respect
The alpha 2.0 recognizes that every individual deserves respect, regardless of rank, gender, nationality, education, political views or corporate allegiance. He shows respect to others because they are human, not because of their enviable accolades or clout.

What does this get you? Showing respect to everyone avoids all the various downfalls of rankism. Belittling others creates bitterness and resentment throughout the hierarchy. This resentment is harbored primarily by those who are disrespected. But it also has an impact on those who witness you being disrespectful or hear of your rankism through the grapevine (imagine how you’d feel if a date was incredibly rude to a server at a restaurant).

By showing respect to everyone-be they workers in the mailroom or high-powered foreign dignitaries-they will be more inclined to put forth a good faith effort on your behalf. Otherwise, they may not put in that extra hustle to get your package in the mail by 4:59 PM, or speak up when they hear someone malign you behind your back in the elevator.

I have bad luck with James Cameron films.

I saw Titanic with a girlfriend of mine back when it came out. It was a bad sign when she’d gone to see it seven times before taking me with her. We got there halfway through the previews and ended up at the back of the theater jammed into a corner. I had a bunch of people to my left all mouthing along with the film word for word and crying over Rose and Jack. Worse, I figured out the “plot twist” before Kate Winslet was ever on camera. It was torture. Three hours of waiting for Leo DiCaprio to die and for the old woman to have the necklace all along. ARGH.

I saw Avatar in 3D. Aside from the shitty, obvious plot and terrible dialogue, that movie gave me simulation sickness. I literally felt like I was going to die. I was so sick walking out of the theater. It was awful.

More people around the world are involved and devoted to soccer/football than any other sport out there. Is it possible that some might use it as an opportunity to attack and engage in violence? Absolutely. Terrorists use gatherings of soccer fans as an easy target to hit, as they did in Kenya just hours ago.

The duration of matches isn’t that big a deal since the matches run shorter than most Yankee games.

Scoring an issue? 1-0 can be more intense than a slugfest in baseball, or a romp in football. It’s the same with hockey; a well played and defended game is thing of art - especially if there’s lots of shots on goal and the goalie has to turn into Shiva to block shots from all angles.

But this article has no redeeming value except to indicate that NRO is past its expiration date.

James Cameron is good at visual spectacle, no doubt about that. Titanic certainly didn’t deserve Best Film - L.A. Confidential was vastly superior in almost every other aspect. I would’ve awarded Titanic an Oscar for visual effects and production design, but that’s about it.

But then again, Stanley Kubrick had him beat. When I’ve been told that Avatar is the “greatest sci-fi movie EVER!!” I usually say, “Bullshit - watch this”

In that little snippet, Kubrick (and Arthur C. Clarke) create a more powerful piece of cinema - all without saying a damned word - than Cameron has ever done. Though I will Cameron props for the first Terminator film.

If a writer makes an alien species too non-human or non-Earthlike, the reader or audience will find it hard to empathize or identify with them. Evil aliens tend to be insectile or reptilian, good aliens more humanoid or furry-animal based.

Soccer is just another Shariah Law plot to bring secular gay humanism to the U.S. /

Also, ICYMI, there was apparently a very charming panel “discussion” about Benghazi! at Heritage

Representatives of prominent conservative groups converged on the Heritage Foundation on Monday afternoon for the umpteenth in a series of gatherings to draw attention to the Benghazi controversy.

But this one took an unexpected turn.

What began as a session purportedly about “unanswered questions” surrounding the September 2012 attacks on U.S. facilities in Libya deteriorated into the ugly taunting of a woman in the room who wore an Islamic head covering.

The session, as usual, quickly moved beyond the specifics of the assaults that left four Americans dead to accusations about the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrating the Obama administration, President Obama funding jihadists in their quest to destroy the United States, Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton attempting to impose Sharia blasphemy laws on Americans and Al Jazeera America being an organ of “enemy propaganda.”

Then Saba Ahmed, an American University law student, stood in the back of the room and asked a question in a soft voice. “We portray Islam and all Muslims as bad, but there’s 1.8 billion followers of Islam,” she told them. “We have 8 million-plus Muslim Americans in this country and I don’t see them represented here.”

Panelist Brigitte Gabriel of a group called ACT! for America pounced. She said “180 million to 300 million” Muslims are “dedicated to the destruction of Western civilization.” She told Ahmed that the “peaceful majority were irrelevant” in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and she drew a Hitler comparison: “Most Germans were peaceful, yet the Nazis drove the agenda and as a result, 60 million died.”

If a writer makes an alien species too non-human or non-Earthlike, the reader or audience will find it hard to empathize or identify with them. Evil aliens tend to be insectile or reptilian, good aliens more humanoid or furry-animal based.

Real aliens probably resemble nothing we’ve ever seen on Earth.

If they’re not carbon-based, will we even recognize them as sentient beings?

re: #205 lawhawk

Philadelphia, cradle of US democracy, birthplace of idiot sports fans who will boo Santa Claus, attack kids, and for which they had to build a jail in their stadiums to deal with the constant hooliganism.

Sporting event as terrorist target is a long time thing in fiction. “Black Sunday” (film) or _Sum of All Fears_ are two off the top of my head where American football venues are targeted.

As for close low-scoring games being exciting it is often tied to how the game is being played. Tight back-and-forth play with scoring opportunities. Yes (as you mentioned). Very conservative play while looking for a low-risk attack opportunity. Nope*. There is room for both romps and tight games since they provide different sources of tension and excitement.

* - My brother referred to it as “Snorris Division hockey” back in the 90s.

You can see the rust bleeding through on the joints around the conning tower right under Jong Un’s hands. They’re riding on a museum piece, which is what the Romeo class is (a relic of the Soviet sub fleet from the 1950s, before the Soviets pursued a nuclear sub fleet).

Not that the US doesn’t have a few of those either - they’re called B-52s, though they’ve been outfitted with the latest tech and have outlasted the more “modern” B-1, F-117, and may well outlast the B-2 due to being the more versatile airframe.

The Romeo isn’t particularly a quiet sub, so even the slight advantages it might have in coastal waters while running in electric mode is mitigated by being loud enough to hear miles away.

We’re not talking a deep water threat by any stretch, and they’d have to hope that someone gets real stupid and ignores the snorkel and banging sounds coming as the North Korean sub gets into a firing position.

Holy crap. But just because you’re older doesn’t mean you can’t have criminal intent. A 60-something woman and her 40-something daughter who lived here when my landlord bought the apts were dealing oxycontin and got caught. There was also a young woman turning tricks in the apt underneath mine (she was gone by the time I got here 4 yrs ago). Both attracted unwanted traffic, and unless you were familiar with this property (which is off the road) you wouldn’t have known it existed.

I appreciate the fact that the couple who own it now keep the place safe and quiet now by doing background checks. The previous owner didn’t care who lived here and didn’t take care of the place, either.

There was a good bit of this kind of discussion kicked off by the great 50s horror movies. One I remember explained why the giant ants in Them couldn’t be just scaled-up formica.

Hell, the utter genius of the shot of the spinning bone cutting to the space based nuclear weapon at the end of the dawn of man in 2001 was more than anything Cameron has done since Terminator.

And yet, he made many dollars on it all. Sad. Really great movies that have great photography, scene setups, acting and a dynamite script don’t seem to get made as much anymore and when they do they just don’t bring the return to the studio and producers.

There’s some terrestrial bias at work, though. We’ve only got one ecosystem to study, and Earth’s successful evolutionary adaptations have been passed along from early organisms to later ones. For example, predators have binocular vision while prey have wide-angle vision. Since most animals have only two eyes, the latter requirement means prey have one eye on each side of their head. In another ecosystem, having three or more eyes could have served the same purpose. We just don’t know, because we have no experience with extra-terrestrial life.

Now that you mention it, I did see Abyss.

But while enjoying the technical aspects of the movie, I couldn’t get involved, until the white rat breathing oxygenated fluorocarbon scene.

I remember that scene, too, particular the reaction of the divers fighting not to inhale the liquid and then looking surprised and relieved when they didn’t drown.

I don’t remember anyone explaining how they got the stuff back out of their lungs again, though.

No big thing.

As I was saying above (I was in the midst of editing my post when you replied), as a lifelong Nashvillian, it’s weird to see things and places in the city as they were the year I was born (1975) in the film, some of them still around and some of them long since gone or changed beyond recognition.

There’s teardown and construction going now on along Music Row.

The large old tree shrouded house at the corner of Division and 17th, gone.

More teardown on 16th Avenue, approx 1/2 block from our building.

Some developers are looking at the UA (ugliest building on Music Row) building.

And look what replaced the C&W Museum - BMI, the large house that Francis Preston built.

And just east of the circle of naked statues (always wonder what Buddy Killen would have thought of the statues on the circle named after him), there’s a large apartment building and motel under construction.

Driehaus withdrew his complaint after losing his reelection race, but SBA List continued to challenge the Ohio law against false political speech on the grounds that it violates the First Amendment right to free speech. Two lower courts ruled that the group could not continue to challenge the law in district court because it was no longer facing a sufficiently imminent injury, but the Supreme Court unanimously reversed those decisions Monday in Susan B. Anthony List v. Driehaus.

“Denying prompt judicial review would impose a substantial hardship on petitioners, forcing them to choose between refraining from core political speech on the one hand, or engaging in that speech and risking costly Commission proceedings and criminal prosecution on the other,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in the unanimous opinion.

Politicians can now lie legally.

U.S. captures Benghazi suspect in secret raid

washingtonpost.com

“The officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured near Benghazi by American troops, working alongside the FBI, following months of planning, and was now in U.S. custody “in a secure location outside Libya.” The officials said there were no casualties in the operation, and that all U.S. personnel involved have safely left Libya.

“Khattala’s apprehension is a major victory for the Obama administration, which has been criticized for having failed so far to bring those responsible for the Benghazi attacks to justice.

“One jubilant official called Khattala’s capture “a reminder that when the United States says it’s going to hold someone accountable and he will face justice, this is what we mean.” More

Ten Cent Beer Night was a promotion held by Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians during a game against the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Stadium on Tuesday, June 4, 1974. The idea behind the promotion was to attract more fans to the game by offering 12 U.S. fl oz (354.9 ml) cups of 3.2% beer for just 10 cents each (regular price was 65 cents) with a limit of six per purchase. During the game, fans became heavily intoxicated, culminating in a riot in the ninth inning which caused the game to be forfeited due to the crowd’s uncontrollable rowdiness and because the game could not be resumed in a timely manner.

Three years ago we had a second story built on our house. For 8 weeks, my wife and I lived in our basement with 3 cats and a dog. We had access to the bathroom, kitchen and my office, but the rest of the house was blocked off.

Once the construction was done and we could go into our living room, I felt like we were living in the Taj Mahal.

Today, several co-workers are showing off their cellphone videos. It appears that one of the more pressing social problems of our age is the fact that, although almost everyone now carries a reasonably capable digital video camera in their pocket all the time, very few people seem to understand that in order to film a subject you need to actually point the camera directly at the subject you want to film and hold it relatively steady for the duration of filming. This seems to be completely lost on a lot of people.

Phung would have to start at the beginning, explaining that child sex exploitation is far from a phenomenon contained to distant, third-world corners of the globe.

Fifty-five percent of child pornography worldwide is produced in the US,
and the FBI estimates that 100,000 to 300,000 minors are sold for sex each year nationally (that’s 10-30 percent of the global market). The average age that a minor starts working in the US skin trade is between 12 and 14, according to a 2005 University of Pennsylvania study titled “The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in the US, Canada, and Mexico.”

I remember from about 20 years ago that the University of Michigan basketball team won some big game. The fans stormed through the college town portion of Ann Arbor, tearing awnings off shops, breaking windows and damaging cars.

The following day, the damage was blamed on the Hash Bash———a yearly gathering of marijuana enthusiasts advocating legalization while likely getting high on the “Diag”. The Hash Bash had never been associated with significant violence or property damage in all the years it had been held, but the local papers went with this absurd scenario since both the city and the U of M had been looking to shut it down and needed an excuse.

U.S. captures Benghazi suspect in secret raid

washingtonpost.com

Should have sent Bush the Lesser after him. He might never have been found. After a year or so of looking Dubya would just declare he doesn’t think about him any more and that would be that.
