The pope shook hands and walked out. I understand the walking out, but not the shaking hands.

It’s the gracious thing to do, particularly given that he hadn’t heard a translation yet, but knew that the guy had hijacked the podium.

And for what it’s worth, I shake hands with my adversaries on a regular basis. I’ve noticed it throws them off balance, more so when they themselves are the sort to foam at the mouth at the earliest opportunity.
