From what I read, communist/progressive Iranians who helped the Mullahs to power to “liberate” Iran from the “evil” Shah, were in turn slaughtered because they had been merely useful idiots to the even more totalitarian mullahs.

The commie elements in Iran had a hand in destabilizing the Shah. The religious elements where all for that. But the commie ideal was to drive the Shah out, then ask Russia to come in and help and set up a Soviet Client State. What the commies didn’t count on was Rabbit Bait folding like a piss filled paper bag, yanking the rug out form under the Shah and green lighting Khomenini. The Commies where then left out in the cold with no were to turn.
