After an hour or so to digest, I am of the cautious opinion that Kaine had some room for improvement tonight, stylistically. It’s not easy, as several here have noted, to counter a Gish gallop, especially one as smooth as Pence’s oily delivery made it go down. But I can see where the interruptions, especially early on, would have led viewers to see Kaine as overly aggressive.

Which is a shame, because he can be pretty damn charming when he’s relaxed and able to be himself. This was a thankless task for him. It’s probably for the best that the hurricane will take attention away from the debate very quickly (and that the growing narrative about Pence throwing Trump under the bus will end up being what’s most remembered about the debate by those who do remember it.)
