Thank God it’s over.

Instant analysis: unfortunately, a draw.

Kaine was marginally better on policy - when he bothered to articulate it - otherwise mostly canned talking points. Pence looked OK (even if most of what he said was entirely canned talking points).

Mike’s big problem, though, is just like his running mate’s: a running litany of “he didn’t say that” when video evidence of Trump saying exactly “that” - or worse is readily available.

For now that seems to be what the media is chewing over …

Bottom line, IMO: no loss, but a blown opportunity.

Interesting Times  Oct 4, 2016 • 7:42:48pm

Bleh. This debate was thoroughly set-your-teeth-on-edge aggravating to watch. On the one hand, Kaine interrupting didn’t look good, but on the other - what else can you do when confronted with a smooth, never-ending gish gallop? Pence acted exactly like Romney back in that infamous 2012 debate, when everyone slagged Obama for essentially being “low energy.”

So…I don’t know. If it’s a choice between interrupting the gish gallop and taking the risk of looking angry vs not interrupting and looking as if you aren’t confronting the lies…I honestly don’t know what one is supposed to do.

It’s obvious that Pence knows he won’t be VP. The only way he could defend Trump was with “He didn’t say that”. And everything Kaine claimed Trump said is on video or in transcripts.

He spent the debate laying groundwork for his presidential run in 2020.

Kaine kept swinging on attacks and didn’t sustain focus enough to connect until the end.

Tactical Trump/Pence victory.

Strategic Clinton/Kaine victory.

This is going to become the story:

Seth Masket 10:40 PM

There are two main takeaways. One is that Kaine came off overly aggressive and seemed too eager to get in his memorized talking points. The other is that Pence happily and calmly defended a version of his running mate that doesn’t exist. In Pence’s telling, Trump would be tough on Putin, would never support prosecuting women for having abortions, uses his family charity solely for charitable purposes, etc. And when called on these discrepancies, Pence simply said that Trump isn’t a polished candidate so sometimes says things he doesn’t mean.

Pretty hard to sustain focus in such a rambling style of debate. The moderator failed to clearly mark the boundaries.

I think this debate will fall more toward Kaine as it is broken down over the week. Then Hillary will lash onto the bullshit and whap Trump upside the head with Pence protecting Trump and Trump will get pissed about it all and go off again.

What was actually said doesn’t matter, because there’s no standard of veracity, there’s only a calculation of what needs to be true right now, for maximum advantage.

There was no real choice for Pence is he wanted a political future after next month. Defend Trump and own his failure. The uncertainty is a grind. Out here on Tybee Island my housemate and I are evacuating Thursday to her boyfriend’s home further inland. On the other hand, today at the grocery store, at 2 PM the beer was sold out (people buying up for hurricane parties), but there was still water for sale.

The city government’s word on evacuation will come tomorrow, but we’re not taking chances, as the main road to the island will be flooded over on Friday. So, if we don’t get inland by then, we wouldn’t be able to anyway.

Really hoping this thing grinds itself out over Florida swamp or out to sea. I just moved here, I’d rather not have the place be wiped out before I even unpacked. I really don’t want to lose my motorcycles. :/

Tactics vs. strategy. You’re expecting Rage Furby and Pax to understand the difference. They just assume that putting one of Bill’s paramours in front of Hillary will turn her into a quivering pile of Jello on national TV.

Trump would be more likely to have a meltdown if someone rounded up both former spouses and his paramours and put them within his field of vision, especially if each spent the time texting on her phone.

After an hour or so to digest, I am of the cautious opinion that Kaine had some room for improvement tonight, stylistically. It’s not easy, as several here have noted, to counter a Gish gallop, especially one as smooth as Pence’s oily delivery made it go down. But I can see where the interruptions, especially early on, would have led viewers to see Kaine as overly aggressive.

Which is a shame, because he can be pretty damn charming when he’s relaxed and able to be himself. This was a thankless task for him. It’s probably for the best that the hurricane will take attention away from the debate very quickly (and that the growing narrative about Pence throwing Trump under the bus will end up being what’s most remembered about the debate by those who do remember it.)

2013 Yamaha FZ1 and an ‘01 Ducati SuperSport 750ie. I *just* got the Duck running. I brought them to the islands last week, they’re not even Georgia plated yet. :(

They’re parked and covered under a friend’s carport a couple of blocks away. I’m going to move them alongside his house wall and strap them down tight tomorrow. Winds don’t worry me too much, but flooding does.

I put them on new insurance this afternoon (Progressive won’t cover out here) so they both have low-deductible comprehensive for a third less than I was paying for just one bike in DFW, TX. In theory I could replace them for $500 out of pocket if the worst happened… But I’d rather that not happen! Unfortunately I don’t know anybody inland with a garage.

I HAD a friend on Wilmington who could have helped out, but we got drunk and slept together a couple of months ago and that complicated her relationship with her boyfriend, so… That’s not an option. ;)

[…]

Their research centers on topology, a branch of mathematics involving step-wise changes like making a series of holes in an object. The difficult-to-grasp concept was illustrated by Nobel Committee member Thors Hans Hansson at a news conference using a cinnamon bun, a bagel and a Swedish style of pretzel with two holes.

I know the criticism about Kaine will be that he didn’t go after Pence about his own background. My response to that is that Kaine did the most good by putting Pence on the defensive about the guy he’s running with. If you make the debate about Pence, then people flip the channel because Pence isn’t running for president. But if you keep Pence dodging questions about Trump’s statements and positions, then you realize that even his own VP won’t defend the man.

That’s the big takeaway of tonight: Even Mike Pence won’t defend Trump. Kaine may have been excitable and too eager to interrupt, but he was also happy to talk about who Hillary is and what she’s running on. Pence kept stumping for a campaign that doesn’t exist.

Funny thing is, there’s actually nothing in the Constitution that would seem to explicitly prohibit an elector from casting a ballot for the same person for President and VP. (Except for electors in New York, who can’t cast ballots for a New Yorker for both President and VP. But could they vote for “Donald Trump, Trump Tower, NYC” for president and “Donald Trump, Mar-A-Lago, Palm Beach, FL” for veep?)

It was a push. Pence did well initially when Kaine was jumping in. Stupid on his part.

In the last half, Kaine made Pence look like an idiot defending Trump’s actual statements.

Could have been so much better. Lost opportunity. Pretty major fuck-up by Kaine.

But again, a push, shouldn’t affect the overall belief that Drumpf is a disaster.

Blech, I was hoping for so much more.

One issue I take with the Pew polling is that they want to force people into a “Democratic”-“Republican” paradigm, as well as the usual “liberal”-“conservative” paradigm. The latter suffers from a lack of meaning, the former from a forced meaning.

One thing that doesn’t strongly influence opinion on climate issues, perhaps surprisingly, is one’s level of general scientific literacy. According to the survey, the effects of having higher, medium or lower scores on a nine-item index of science knowledge tend to be modest and are only sometimes related to people’s views about climate change and climate scientists, especially in comparison with party, ideology and concern about the issue. But, the role of science knowledge in people’s beliefs about climate matters is varied and where a relationship occurs, it is complex. To the extent that science knowledge influences people’s judgments related to climate change and trust in climate scientists, it does so among Democrats, but not Republicans. For example, Democrats with high science knowledge are especially likely to believe the Earth is warming due to human activity, to see scientists as having a firm understanding of climate change, and to trust climate scientists’ information about the causes of climate change. But Republicans with higher science knowledge are no more or less likely to hold these beliefs. Thus, people’s political orientations also tend to influence how knowledge about science affects their judgments and beliefs about climate matters and their trust in climate scientists.

In other words, for self described Republicans, acceptance of climatology as valid science is invariant over any demonstrated science knowledge.

Which is weird if we ponder it long… and telling about what it means in 2016 to describe one as a “Republican”.

The VP debate was… pretty dull actually. 538 likes to do ‘3 winners and 2 losers’, so here’s my two cents.

Winner: Mike Pence. He won the room, being calm, cool and collected, being patient, making his points firmly, and being soft-spoken and direct. Which is to say being everything that Trump is not. He also lied out of his teeth all night long and pretty much refused to support Trump on anything, but his base won’t care about this.

Winner: The Fact-checkers. That whole lying through his teeth thing? Yeah. Most of what he lied about had ample video evidence out there. The fact-checkers are going to be pointing out the lies all week, which will matter greatly to the sorts of people who read fact-checker articles and matter not-at-all to the undecided voter. But then, I don’t think the undecided voter was watching this debate anyway.

Winner: Hillary Clinton. Hillary didn’t need Kaine to win. She needed Kaine to remind America that Trump is absurd, which Kaine did repeatedly, and to not make a major gaffe or fall into a major trap which could become a Trump commercial that changes the race. Kaine, IMHO, succeeded, which means that the fundamentals of this contest won’t change at all.

Loser: The Networks. This was a dull debate, and the first half hour of it was a mishmash of people talking over each other (usually with Tim Kaine being the worst offender). I’m guessing most of America that aren’t hardcore political junkies had switched to Netflix before 15 minutes were up.

Loser: Ted Cruz. Sorry, Ted, but Mike Pence was doing more to prepare himself for 2020 than to help Trump in 2016, and Pence did exactly that. Especially given that half the Republican Party still feels betrayed by Cruz’ speech at the RNC. Pence just dropped into the status of first-tier candidate representing the religious faction of the Republican Party.

Not really. No Veep debate has ever had any real impact on the presidential race.

Personally I’d say tonight was a big loss for Trump, because the most favorable opinion seems to be that Pence won because the match went to the judges. And winning on points is not what Trump needed, he needed Pence to put Kaine on the mat for the full ten count. Kaine managed to last through the match without a bad gaffe and most of the criticism is about his early debate demeanor. Once that first half-hour squabble passed, it was Kaine backing Pence into a corner again and again and forcing him to either defend Trump or duck out of the way.

Skimming over the Pew report, there is one response from within me and I suppose it may be a characterological flaw (arrogance) on my part, but here it is:

Majority of Americans are ignorant.

Now I can put that in a less crass manner - I have beautiful words, the biggest words, the best words… um… er… anyway….

Regardless of anything else, though, ignorance by itself is not a moral issue. However, the following is:

Many Americans are self-willingly ignorant.

Consider the following question (on the Pew poll) and response to one of the answers:

Climate scientists understand very well

Whether climate change is occurring: 33%

In other words, only a third of Americans believe that climatologists really even know whether climate change is occurring. (see pg. 21 of the full report.)

I wish the 7th Circuit Ct. of Appeals slap-down of Pence for discriminating against Syrian refugees had come up in the debate. Posner, who was nominated by Ronny Raygun, had the harshest words for Pence. He mentioned that Pence’s attitude toward Syrian refugees is like the racism some Americans practice in dealing with POC, especially Black Americans. He wrote that there were zero examples of Syrian refugees breaking the law or committing acts of terrorism in America. I can imagine that if this subject had come up, Pence would have denied the circuit court ruled against him.

Talk about non-responsive—Kellyanne is a master. In an interview with Megyn Kelly, Megyn says:
“Putin has had journalists shot in the street so it’s a little jarring to hear him praised by Donald Trump as a strong leader,” Kelly explained.

Kellyanne answers a different question, then drifts into a total non-sequitor:
“Nobody thinks Obama is a strong leader,” Conway replied. “Why, in the new CNN poll, is Hillary at 53 percent among women?

Megyn points out that Kellyanne is full of shit:
“She’s beating Donald Trump by some 20 points with women,” the Fox News host interrupted. Kelly exclaimed. “His numbers are historically low for a Republican nominee with women. Historically low.”

Apparently unaware that 20 is a larger number than 13, Kellyanne responds:
“Mitt Romney lost women by 13 points and John McCain lost by 13,” Conway argued.

Megyn goes into a thorough explanation of how badly Trump is doing with women and why. Kellyanne, apparently not hearing a word of the explanation, responds with:

“I guess I would focus on why we’re here, which is the vice presidential debate,” Conway said.

Sigh.
