Can we just stop with the naming of winter storms already?

I keep waiting for them to start naming “Summer Storm Idiot Name” for every thunderclap since they give out “Winter Storm Ignorant Name” at the first sign of snow flakes.

Thing is, the relatively recent practice of naming winter storms is primarily and squarely on the Weather Channel as a straight-up marketing ploy to get and keep viewers tuning in (and a ploy that is increasingly being cribbed by other media outlets), because, AFAIK, no legitimate governmental weather services (like NOAA or the UK’s Met Office) officially name winter storms like tropical storms/hurricanes are (they do number winter storms, IIRC).
