Saturday Jam: Alsarah & the Nubatones: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Fascinating Sudanese music
Music • Views: 35,913

YouTube

When singer Alsarah left her native Sudan, she was just a child who’d shown an interest in music. She’s said it served as her coping mechanism during a subsequent transition to life here in the U.S. That passion led her to a university degree in ethnomusicology.

It also drew her to musicians who were passionate about the intersection of culture, music and migration. Together, their one-of-a-kind expression has been called “East African retro pop.” But that tag only scratches the surface: In their hands, the music pulses, breathes and comes alive with a mix of tradition and contemporary influences.

Alsarah and her band The Nubatones mesmerize and enchant in this performance behind Bob Boilen’s Desk. They undoubtedly opened new worlds for more than a few who saw the performance live, so it’s a pleasure to share it with the world.

Here’s a thing:

The Emoluments Clause: Its Text, Meaning, and Application to Donald J. Trump, December 16, 2016, by Norman Eisen, Richard Painter, and Laurence Tribe. PDF

‘Never in American history has a president-elect presented more conflict of interest questions and foreign entanglements than Donald Trump. Given the vast and global scope of Trump’s business interests, many of which remain shrouded in secrecy, we cannot predict the full gamut of legal and constitutional challenges that lie ahead. But one violation, of constitutional magnitude, will run from the instant that Mr. Trump swears he will “execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”1 While holding office, Mr. Trump will receive—by virtue of his continued interest in the Trump Organization and his stake in hundreds of other entities—a steady stream of monetary and other benefits from faithfully foreign powers and their agents.’

Mrs. Fish’s feline overlord, the previously pictured Basement Cat, likes to fall asleep in my brand new desk chair downstairs. When I was assembling it, I put it together, moved it down into the basement, I literally turned around to put some of the packing away and when I turned back, she was curled up in it, fast asleep. President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday revealed that he was rooting for then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to win the U.S. elections last month.
The Philippine president made the confession in a press conference in Davao City, following his state visits to Cambodia and Singapore.

According to Duterte, Trump does not appear hostile or antagonistic to him.
“In the liking of my character, it was Trump all along,” Duterte replied, after being asked by a foreign journalist who he rooted for to be the next White House occupant.

“I like his mouth. He said so, we talk in the same language,” Duterte explained.

Conflict of interest? Hell yes!

Whatcha gonna do about it?

When the housing market tanked and the Great Recession of 2007-2009 began, the federal government took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, both deeply underwater, sending their stock prices plummeting. The Obama administration has since insisted on keeping the housing lenders under government authority and has redirected their profits into government coffers.

During this time speculators like Paulson bought up stock at bargain basement prices and began lobbying the government to end federal control and oversight of the lenders and then recapitalize them and release them back to the private market. Such a policy would, undoubtedly, send the stock price soaring and those who had tens of millions worth of penny-stock would see billions in profit ― including Paulson. Trump had invested between $3 million and $15 million into Paulson’s funds, according to the president-elect’s most recent disclosure report filed in May.

So far, Trump’s picks for his economic team are all supporters of recapitalization and release. His choice for Treasury secretary, former Goldman Sachs banker Steve Mnuchin, is a well known proponent of releasing Fannie and Freddie from government control. Mulvaney’s selection as budget director is another win for investors who support the release of the housing lenders.

Also, it was kind of cold (whines the CA resident - but I was running in open shoes, and wearing a short sleeve shirt, and it was at best in the mid-50s).

So maybe at some point I need to get a long sleeve shirt.

Come to the wild north country. The low tonight is going to be -25 degrees F (-32 degrees C). The high tomorrow will be less than 0 degrees F. Enjoy your stay!

calochortus  Dec 17, 2016 • 4:05:23pm

Speaking of brutal cold-I need to go throw a sheet over a plant or two since the temps will likely dip into the upper 20s tonight. Yesterday I decided it would be prudent to detach the hoses from the spigots, though it didn’t really freeze last night. There was water on the neighbor’s (flat) roof that froze over night, but the water in our birdbath (being mostly under a tree) did not. A lesson in radiational cooling.

Apparently some of my Christmas present from my parents includes more running gear, including maybe one pair of long pants (I run mostly in capri length) and some shirts with long sleeves. Doesn’t help for the NC runs, but I can probably shiver my way through those (and maybe they’ll only be 4 mile runs instead of 6 miles, especially if it’s raining).

Which just leaves the shoes to be sorted out, since at some temperature point going practically barefoot is maybe not the best plan. (The current plan for the runs in NJ has me borrowing my mom’s running shoes as back-up, if necessary.)

As Tom said in his goodbye to The Bear:

As far as The Bear is concerned, if he did have the intellectual, empathetic character I ascribed to him, I don’t think he’d want you to mourn him. I think he’d want you to celebrate his life, maybe by doing a little something for someone else: refugees fleeing terrible situations or animals who have not had the luxuries he has had, since his awful start in life. I can picture people on social networks linking to this piece without properly read it and saying “2016 deals its final callous blow”, in that part joking but serious but part joking but actually serious way people do on social networks, but that’s not true. This isn’t a callous blow. It’s just a natural ending to something good, that, as endings go, is as about as non-cruel as you could wish for. The Bear had an amazingly full and unusually long life and for the last, long chunk of it was clearly very content indeed, which probably explains his fierce will to stay here, in the land of the living. I tried to make it even better for him at the end, if that was possible. I feel certain that at my local village shop I am known as “The Guy Who Buys All The Chicken”. They probably would never guess that I am a vegetarian.

I still think 2016 sucks soooo much.

I sent that very last section to mr. klys, who didn’t know The Bear. And it made me cry when I read it.

There’s a lot about 2016 that hasn’t been what we’ve wanted it to be, but I’ve also seen good progress this year. My weight loss and getting in shape. Writing my book. Probably won’t go down in the books as my favorite year, but I’m not sure I’d describe it as my worst. Unfortunately.

I know. The two dogs are enough for us right now —economically. A new overlord will be our reward when all the bills are paid and the kid is out of college.

With all the work we’ve done in the house (including making underneath the stairs a dog crate) we included a cat hole on the stairs to a built in shelf unit. I want to expand it so a new kitty can move about without canine interference. We have a shelf for kitty food and water way up high.

Our neighbor has a leopard kitty and it is soooo kewl. I keep thinking about a maine coone or a rag doll, but I know we’ll go with a barn or shelter cat as usual.

I feel confident he was right. AC particularly, IMHO, but I’ve only lived in 2 houses that had it. Our current house it was done much later than the original construction, so the system was only set up for heat. Unfortunately that means that the “cold air returns” are just that-they return cold air to the furnace/AC. Not what you want with AC. We build air dams (random pieces of foam core) around them to raise the level the cold air needs to rise to before it gets sucked back down.

I keep waiting for them to start naming “Summer Storm Idiot Name” for every thunderclap since they give out “Winter Storm Ignorant Name” at the first sign of snow flakes.

Thing is, the relatively recent practice of naming winter storms is primarily and squarely on the Weather Channel as a straight-up marketing ploy to get and keep viewers tuning in (and a ploy that is increasingly being cribbed by other media outlets), because, AFAIK, no legitimate governmental weather services (like NOAA or the UK’s Met Office) officially name winter storms like tropical storms/hurricanes are (they do number winter storms, IIRC).

Is Russia full of:

White People? -check
Draconian Religious Ideas? -check
Nationalistic Fervor? -check

See where I am going with this?

Well, I bought the ingredients for homemade hot chocolate.

I can’t find my original recipe —anyone have one they think is better than the above link?

I seem to remember there was vanilla extract in mine.

I know, I just think it’s idiotic.

It appears that all that’s left on my to do list for the day is writing checks and packing (ugh).

No way am I setting foot outside the house tomorrow.

It was a good thing United allowed me to reschedule my flight back to The Twin Cities this weekend to later in the week-they were canceling flights at O’Hare on Friday and I would have landed right smack in the middle of snowpocalypse.
