Couldn’t agree with you more about the first point. But I can’t disagree more about the second. The value of “approval polls” tends to range between zero and diddly-squat when it comes to actual voter preferences (still less actual voting). For instance, “Congressional Republicans”, as a category, usually have approval ratings down there with STDs; yet they still have a huge majority in the House, and (despite the thin margin) control of the Senate. Actually translating poor approval-ratings into solid electoral gains is an uphill trudge: one can only hope that the Opposition can manage it next year….
