I remember very well the market crash of 1987.

It dropped over 100 points on Friday, which was about 4%. I watched Wall Street Week that night, where the experts were all confident that the worst had passed, and Monday, after having the weekend to calmly reflect on it, investors would be calm.

All the experts but one, who said “It’ll be a bloodbath”.

It was.

Yep: Black Monday ‘87: I recall calling a friend of mine who was working at Merrill Lynch then to chat, and having her hang up on me in a panic, yelling that the Dow was down 500 points (on a then 2200-point index), and thinking that she was definitely over-the-top, and had to be exaggerating. Which of course, then as now, was no odd condition for Wall-Streeters.
Until I saw the day’s results: a still-record 22.61% drop in one trading session. Man, they did things right in the Olden Days……
