Actually, “corps” is one of those words that confuse the heck out of native speakers, even.

I still remember when I was a young reader and first encountered the word. My mom was my dictionary in those days, so I asked her whether there was an “e” missing from the end. Good guess, she said. But wrong.

She told me how to pronounce it, what it meant, and then explained about words of French origin.

I have a great mom.
