Newt’s got serious problems but he did play a cardinal role in balancing the budget. The later failure of the GOP to continue to contain spending was the produce of getting to comfortable and the leadership’s refusal to take unpleasant but needed actions (such as vetoing a bill, in GWB’s case).

Agreed. Newt teed it up and the guys who took the baton dropped it. There are some young guns (Ryan & Cantor) who know what to do now.
