I would love to figure out how to get more women and minorities in engineering, but how and where you grow up still has a big influence on most people. And as the Coates’ article points out, blacks have to spend more money just to stay in place, making it hard to do things like buy computers and telescopes and electronics kits. Girls, while less likely encouraged not to be mathematicians, they probably aren’t encouraged: Who shows their daughter how to change the tires/oil/spark plugs on a car, or runs them out to look at the telescope.
