I don’t know if you ever watched UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS? I often remember how the Bellamys couldn’t cope after WWI, and were eventually demolished by the krach of 1929. All their certainties had eroded, the world had “turned” (as Stephen King says). The British empire itself was but a ghost of what it was before 1914. I think we’re living one of these times.

And the Suez Crisis of 1956 pretty much spelled the end of Britain as a global superpower.
