I lived in NYC for most of my life - including the ragged 1970s and 1980s. We had our Summer of Sam, Bronx is Burning, and years where murders approached 2,000 or more. Now? 350 homicides is seen as a spike. Crime overall is down.
NYC is far safer than most other places in the country, though there are pockets where crime is far higher than state or even city averages.
