On the subject of fiction, I guess it’s because I’ve only recently gotten in to reading fiction since I’ve become an English minor but I find it tough to name characters. I also find it all too tempting to be autobiographical with my protagonists. The idea of a story about a return serviceman from WWI or WWII or even Korea is something appeals to me though. The idea of re-adjusting to society after years away from home is something that appeals to me.

For first names, Social Security has a record of the top 1000 baby names recorded in the United States for every year after 1880. (I also found a list of early Mt. Holyoke women’s given names which I am using shamelessly, as it gives a delightful cross-section of names given to college girls born between 1820 and 1850. Some charming old-fashioned things.)
