Trump wants to push China as this evil sinister nation and I’ll admit, I have no love for a lot of their policies but the PRC isn’t a cartoon character either crackling evilly eitehr.

Very true. I’m far from a China expert, but the Party will always have a delicate balance to keep between avoiding domestic upheaval and pushing limits in East Asia and Southeast Asia. They are not immune to the forces of global economics and a severe downturn could see China under domestic stress that may be hard to contain.
