So even the fig leaf of “We’ll get a female replacement” turns out to be a lie. I honestly cannot fathom a worse scenario than the one playing out, where a woman gets Franken’s seat not because of an election but because she fell into it, and only on a promise that she’ll vacate it for (likely) another man come next November. Whatever value she had as a symbol of the party “taking sexual harassment seriously” just went up in smoke.
