It changes my perspective on war a little bit when I think of it like that. Names on a memorial are personal friends of family - or my personal friends, for Afghanistan and Iraq. I wonder how many of my high school classmates came home from the Iraqi desert draped in an American flag? I know a couple who came back intact, I could probably ask them if I gathered the courage.
Saw the Menin Gate in Ypres. Itβs a memorial to all those who were MIA in WWI. I got a photo of someone who shared a surname with one of my relatives.
