Thanks. I suppose I understand then how this could be used as a political slur on Obama. Not that I agree with the logic (we have had a smaller GDP growth % than China/India for a while, and that kind of math shouldn’t be hard to follow).

Its interesting that our changing (diminishing) role internationally requires almost more management and attention domestically than it does abroad.

It is a bit sad to realize that when I’m a senior citizen we won’t be the/a superpower, but the sooner we realize we can’t have everything and impose our will everywhere all the time, the quicker we start enacting rational policies.

I think that is one reason the early 50s seems to a sort of conservative dream state. No real economic competition since Japan, Germany, and Europe in general were recovering from WWII and/or the coming down of the Iron Curtain. Republican in the White House (Eisenhower), and a sort of lull in minority politics (though things were brewing, it’s just that the lid appeared to be on the pot.)

And the US was the sole recognized leader in the Free World while we were starting our run as the dominant cultural entity as well.
