There is a story from the World War 2 Normandy Landings in 1944.

US soldiers were attempting to surround a German bunker on the beach. They started hearing yelling, then some shots and loud cheering. Suddenly a bunch of Germans soldiers exited the bunker and surrendered to the Americans.

It turned out that the soldiers were draftees who had lived in Poland until Germany forcefully incorporated their area into Germany. They were sent as a unit under a German sergeant to man a bunker on the Normandy beach. When the Americans landed the soldiers wanted to surrender, but the sergeant would not let them. So, eventually they shot the sergeant and surrendered.
