Some More News: The Devastating Impact of ‘Fear of Crime’ Politics

Please note that this one has some deserved criticism of Joe Biden’s record on crime policies, with some cringeworthy archival footage I had not seen before.

Hi! In today’s episode, we honor 4/20, the weed day, by discussing the history of ‘fear of crime’ politics and its impact on our society. Probably negative impact, if I had to guess!

But his prophets on cable news raged against the vaccine as did many of the Messiah’s apostles. The Messiah was misled— and that is the message they are going with.

Plus Trump only tepidly supported the vaccine at a rally, was booed by the crowd, and never mentioned it again. He prevaricated on whether he would get a booster.

A cousin just shared on FB a story about a young woman who became very ill, was hospitalized, and almost died. Based on the picture it seemed it was going to be a Covid story — but no, it was about EVALI, a disease completely unfamiliar to me. Apparently vaping can do serious damage to your lungs; dozens have died from this illness. EVALI = “e-cigarette or vaping product-use associated lung injury”. I don’t know if the current formulation of these products has eliminated or reduced these dangerous side-effects.

Dana Milbank’s column in WaPo is pretty funny. Give it a read.

The books had names such as “Florida Reveal Math,” or “Florida’s B.E.S.T. Math,” or simply “Florida Math.” The titles essentially codified what Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’s censorship program has accomplished: There is math — and then there is Florida math.

On one level, we already understood that “Florida math” is not the same thing as “math”:

Problem 1: In an election, the Republican candidate gets 232 electoral votes and the Democratic candidate gets 306. Who won?

Answer: It was rigged.

Unless every hidden dollar is returned into his available assets, the trial will be a mockery. It will be justice only if he is reduced to absolute poverty.

Regarding the “defund the police” narrative, the Wingnut Party here in the Unicameral tried to pass a bill prohibiting “defunding the police.”

Aside from the huge waste of time in the Unicameral over a Republican’s priority bill (meaning it doesn’t go through the usual committee process here), several Democrats had to point out that “where’s this crime wave? Two-thirds of the cities and villages in Nebraska have no police or marshals at all.”

I can’t help but think that this was staged, that Piers told TFG in advance what he was about to do FOR TEH RATINGS!!!!!!!11!! and TFG agreed, but when the time came he just couldn’t handle the damage to his ego caused by Piers telling him to his face that he lost.

Also from the way he gets out of the chair he probably soiled himself.

Putting a new liner down under the kitchen sink. Really interesting stuff parked in the corners of the cabinets that I can’t get to because when they put the appliances in on the last renovation, they didn’t bother to renovate the cabinets, and there is no longer space to access those doors. Found a 2 quart wall of beer jug from the mid 70’s. Sadly, no cryptocurrency.

Staged or not, it’s ready made for anti-GOP ads from every Democrat on down the line. It’s ready-made for 2024. Heck, it’s ready made for 2022 and the Midterms and every GOPer who covered forTrump and voted to invalidate the election.

I think some of that will depend on when those funds were “hidden”. If before the judgement, perhaps protected, in some dubious legal way. If after the judgement, well, that will be a whole different kettle of fish.

Until the program is broadcast, we don’t know how it will be perceived by the viewing public or how much demonstrates Piers successfully challenging Trump, or whether he ultimately and meekly accepts Trump’s bombastic replies. Ads are not known for providing a fair or honest glimpse of a program.

That’s the way I see it. They want time to investigate his finances and seize what ever he has. If he would have just waited until after the financial judgement, he would be avoiding some of this scrutiny. So, the Judge had to halt the trail until that is done. Not a very wise move in my opinion.

Well, what do we stand for? Legalized marijuana, low hanging fruit? NO! That vote in the House was just for fundraising.

Garland is impotent and worse than being a place holder.

Harris was put in charge of the border and she hasn’t indicated that she has a clue what is going on or what to do.

The administration was blindsided by lower court mask ruling and STILL doesn’t know what to do.

The Sec. of Treasury said months ago that inflation was passing deal MONTHS ago. POTUS Biden has not addressed the nation at all on this, it really is kinda important.

Here’s the problem: We have to sell Sophie’s Choice to people like our dear b.d. I don’t blame them for getting frustrated; there are days I’m pretty fed up with the administration and the Democrats, even though I know most of it is on the Republican obstructionists in the Senate. But we have to be able to convince people, convincingly, that if they don’t vote for the side they see as not doing anything, the side that is doing all the bad things WILL WIN. It’s a choice between worse and worst, for them, and asking them to make it is a tall order, but that’s what we’ve got to do if we are going to have any choice of surviving the rest of the decade.

“An audio recording obtained by NBC News appears to show that former President Donald Trump’s highly publicized interview with Piers Morgan did not end with Trump storming off the set, as edited promotional video clips suggest,” the network reported. “Instead, according to the recording, which was provided by Trump’s spokesman, the two men thanked each other and laughed at the conclusion of the interview for Talk TV, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.”

The walkout was first reported by the NY Post. The tabloid is also owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

We can’t become an unquestioning party like the other guys.

I have opinions. My opinions may not match everyone’s. My opinions shouldn’t match everyone’s. I am wrong a lot. No one is right all the time.

It sucks, we are right in our goals. Denying that there are real problems is not laying out a welcome mat to the GOP and me vocalizing them is not inviting them to power. C’mon people,

But what you’re saying is that you’re willing to let the assholes out stubborn us.

re: #14 Hecuba’s daughter

A cousin just shared on FB a story about a young woman who became very ill, was hospitalized, and almost died. Based on the picture it seemed it was going to be a Covid story — but no, it was about EVALI, a disease completely unfamiliar to me. Apparently vaping can do serious damage to your lungs; dozens have died from this illness. EVALI = “e-cigarette or vaping product-use associated lung injury”. I don’t know if the current formulation of these products has eliminated or reduced these dangerous side-effects.

I was hearing a lot about this pre-pandemic, and not a thing since Feb. 2020.

re: #85 No Malarkey!

Biden has gotten a lot of good shit done. He’s not perfect, but nobody is, and he has to work with a razor thin majority in the Senate, a lot of hostile state governments, and a radical reactionary Supreme Court. If we don’t fight for democracy, we will lose it, so suck it up, donate, knock on doors, make phone calls, and vote.

I’m old; I was a teenager and young adult through the turmoil and assassination and deaths in the 1960’s and early 70’s. I was “Clean for Gene” in the 1968 election. Even though many of my friends refused to support Humphrey, I decided that in a choice between Nixon and Humphrey, it’s Humphrey who would get my vote, the first year I was eligible to vote. I did not trust Nixon back then and his successful Southern strategy that transformed the Republican party certainly confirmed my concern. He ran on a “secret” plan to end the war and managed to get the plurality needed to win, at which time he escalated the conflict.

I don’t consider Biden a lesser evil, but the impossible task with the 50-50 Senate when 2 of our 50 often are hitting for the other side makes it difficult to accomplish his goals. How many positions in all areas of the government remain unfilled because of the obstacles imposed by the party of treason? How many problems are due to the large number of judges that Trump appointed because too many voters hated Hillary and either voted for Jill or voted Trump or sat the election out? We almost lost it all after the 2020 election — my sister keeps saying “who would have thought Dan Quayle was the one to save democracy”. As discouraging as it seems, we have to keep fighting. Our system failed completely with the corrupt 1876 election and it took 90 years to recover from that damage; if we let this evil triumph again, there will be no coming back.

And of course:

“An audio recording obtained by NBC News appears to show that former President Donald Trump’s highly publicized interview with Piers Morgan did not end with Trump storming off the set, as edited promotional video clips suggest,” the network reported. “Instead, according to the recording, which was provided by Trump’s spokesman, the two men thanked each other and laughed at the conclusion of the interview for Talk TV, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.”

The walkout was first reported by the NY Post. The tabloid is also owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

So my earlier speculation appears correct. Piers likely lets Trump get away with his lies on every issue.

We have to remember that no matter how much we want to believe otherwise, no politician does things because that’s what they promised or believe is right. At least not any that get any kind of power. In nearly all forms of government, power is a game and we get to see very few of the pieces. Now, we can be disappointed and vocally demand action, but it’s no guarantee and it’s no real surprise when seemingly contrary actions are taken. It sucks, but this is the way power has been forever. We can either work with it or be run over by it. Fixing the system can only be done very slowly and only if the proverbial lesser evil consistently wins.

Wake me up when we have a proper sortition government. 🤡

Your ire should be directed at national news media. THEY are the fucking problem. Unless a Democrats generates a buzzworthy 10 second sound bite about Disney characters fucking or something clickbaity did it even happen? The Republicans have spent 40 years taking over our government piece by piece, inch by inch while simultaneously priming the news media to give them all the deference in the world that Democrats are never given.

Record low unemployment rate. Household cash vs. debt is at levels not seen in 40 years. All of these positive economic things that can be talked about, but that doesn’t generate anger which generates clicks and eyeballs on our media content. Let a Republican say the most ridiculous lie about the economy and they’ll get their spot in news media for a few days which allows that false information to become the narrative.

Democrats can do all of the stuff you want, but that doesn’t make the news. The ridiculousness of the Republicans in response does. That is what we should be fighting.

The chapter 11 that Jones filed tolls the lawsuit, while those who won lawsuits against him now become creditors in the bankruptcy.

Of course, IANAL….

Well, obviously, the bk could go through the bankruptcy courts, which means that the plaintiffs are now creditors and have to wait until the trustee sells and then pays the creditors. On the other hand, if, as has been alleged, Jones might end up in trouble with the bk court if he engages in bankruptcy fraud in listing out his assets. It’s rumored Jones has been moving assets to relatives and friends to avoid having to disclose them in the bankruptcy. I’m pretty sure the Sandy Hook families’ attorneys have engaged a bankruptcy specialist to figure out their next steps.

I guess it’s time for a different controversial take.

Days after York County, Penna. school board approved a school-hours Bible study group, they denied a Satanic Temple after-school club. Cue the threat of a lawsuit for religious discrimination.

“There is a lot of evil already in this world, so to allow it to come into our school and our community is not OK,” said parent, Laura Vangeli.

“Satan is a liar and Satan will show himself as light when in fact he’s not light,” Maddie Snelbaker said.

Hundreds of parents bringing out the pitchforks to tonight’s school board meeting.

According to the Satanic Temple — a couple of parents from the district asked for the program — in response to the board green lighting a bible study group during school hours.

But when you declared you’re not going to vote, that the Dems ‘aren’t worthy’ it rang a sour note for me. That may just be venting your anger, but it smacked of all the self-important nothing-less-than-perfectionists I’ve had to listen to. That’s their irresponsible response to reality.

Yell as loud and specific as you can to the Dem officials, they need to hear it. But when it comes to Election Day, please hold your nose and vote anyway? There’s a future at stake.

Their launches can be monitored. Their flight paths can be calculated. Their destinations identified…all in the few hours it takes for them to travel 6800 miles. (Siberia —> Central Montana > 30 minutes). Back in the 70s they were a real threat. Now? We’d have five or six passes at them before they even got over a population center.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet some amazing people of different faiths who’ve made major sacrifices to help improve the lives of others.

I can separate them from the institutional rot at the head of some faiths.

So while I can condem the institutional hypocrisy of many faiths, I can’t and won’t paint all practitioners of that faith with a broad brush.

I knew a nun who traveled from village to village through Africa, teaching people how to make an electrolyte solution (think pedialyte) from local ingredients. Since infant death from dehydration (due to diarrhea) was common, she saved many lives, while living in poverty and risking her life daily.

Her faith drove her actions. So while I’ll acknowledge the issues with the institutional church, I won’t ever consider her evil because of her faith.

Apparently Democrats are the only ones in government? Did I miss when that happened?

This.

Biden attempted to address inflation. The Republicans and two Democratic senators opposed it.

Democrats passed two massive spending bills, and Biden has been getting minority and women judges approved, including the first African American woman to become SCOTUS. The Secretary of the Interior has been fixing not only Trump era crap, but shit that has been going on since we claimed lands west of Plymouth.

If we want more, we’re going to need to make Manchin and Sinema and Republicans irrelevant.

Not surprised about this set of tweets from Michael Weiss.

He is a journalist who has written a good bit on Russia and Ukraine. Recently he and a couple of other journalists from his organization went down a rabbit-hole when they decided to identify all the people in a photograph from a 2018 mission between Russia’s Foreign Minister and Japan.

No need to leave, my friend. I’ve been semi-regularly getting yelled at for suggesting I won’t vote for Dems in November* because of reservations about the direction of the party for months now and I’m still here. So long as you don’t scream “HEIL TRUMP!” and keep up with your dues to the Vast Liberal Conspiracytm, then you’re in no danger of being asked to leave.

It seems to me that many, if not most of us, agree on the goals and share the same frustrations. And many of us certainly need to vent on occasion.

But I think that we also usually agree that the vote choice is binary, which of two political parties is _more_ perfect. And not just whether or not the Democrats are perfect.

On the Democratic decisions…I admit that sometimes I am not convinced by their decisions. But, in the end, I voted for them to do the job. And it is now up to them to do it. In a less than perfect environment.

re: #93 Hecuba’s daughter

Our system failed completely with the corrupt 1876 election and it took 90 years to recover from that damage; if we let this evil triumph again, there will be no coming back.

re: #107 rhuarc

This is where I’m at too. Like I’ve said before not too recently, I’m nearing that point of despondence myself. But where my despondence lays is not with the Dems, because I recognize exactly that circumstances leave us with virtually no margin of error, and unlike administrations before, I no longer hold any delusions that the GOP will act as anything more than a monolith against any and all progress. We at best hold the Senate by a mere technicality, and as Hecuba’s Daughter points out, we’re still clearing out the rot left behind by Trump in government agencies that have become poison pills to us acting on so much.

No, my despondence has been reserved for those who refuse to direct any measure of anger or blame toward Republicans and almost solely aim the guns toward the Dems. Both the media that has enabled GOP bad faith and weaponized their own thin skin against any and all Dem criticism, and the ‘do something’ crowd who parlays the lack of visible progress to an immediate lack of will on Dems’ part and forgo any sort of agency toward the GOP. It’s all treated as if the Dems have the fucking Green Lantern ring and could will the utopia into existence and that they haven’t proves that they are the sole meaningful roadblock to anything getting done. Meanwhile, the GOP continues to parlay that lack of blame and consequence into rolling back decades of progress on things like women’s rights, LGBT rights, etc in a tenth of the time it took to actually secure many of those rights. But call it out, and it’s somehow deflection from how much Dems suck and are awful and if they only DID SOMETHING, then something would magically happen and Republicans would crumble to dust like vampires.

It’s the sheer mass prevalence of that everywhere that I see that has me despondent, because it’s literally seeing perfect as the enemy of good. It’s the victory of accelerationism, that seeing the GOP burn everything good down is acceptable because the destruction of the Dems is seen as necessary for even a chance at progress, that we are so hated and despised that us trying to change things is so much more hated than letting the GOP get their way forever that people are willing to shitkick us and overtly crow “I would rather see you defeated and ground into irrelevance than try to fight the GOP”. That such mindset is prevailing and about to do exactly that, hand the ultimate victory to the GOP simply to spite Dems for not being perfect, for not waving the magic wand on a government already beset with institutional advantages and roadblocks that favor the GOP. This, on top of institutional preferences in the media and an electorate that accepts certain behaviors from Republicans but demands bipartisanship and decorum on our parts or otherwise we’re the ones making things ‘uncivil’.

That’s what has me on the edge: that the very act of trying and failing, for any reason, is the worst thing that could happen, even worse than not trying and simply letting evil win. That any failure proves that we are the problem, and the real enemy, and that by our very existence we are ‘the problem’. And that nothing we can do seems to change that, but only exacerbates the problem to the point that our very existence is seen as ‘failure’, that anything and everything we stand for must fall because if we support it, it must be somehow wrong, not because it’s actually wrong, but because it’s not perfect enough to stand up against an enemy that has numerous institutional advantages, but is still somehow seen as so weak and frail that simply willing victory should be enough.

That this is what’s going to kill us in 2022 and 2024, for some us quite literally.

I don’t question the argument of saying that voting for Dems is far more preferable if one wants to avoid a lot of very bad things that will happen if Repubs should return to power. But we need to find a better way to express that than immediately getting in the face of anybody who voices reluctance or concern about the Dem party’s current path and screaming “VOTE DEM OR YOU’RE A FASCIST!!!” I say that mostly because I had a ground-level view of the recent gubernatorial race here in VA and watched the white bread mayonnaise sandwich that our party ran lose bigly because his entire campaign platform was “MY OPPONENT IS ENDORSED BY DONALD TRUMP!!!”

We barely held Congress two years ago despite record turnouts and that was with Donald Trump on the ballot. Dems don’t have that advantage this year, no matter how hard our candidates try to pin him to their Repub opponents. Plus electoral amnesia is setting in, that condition where voters tend to forget just how much of a shitshow the last administration was by the time the midterms roll around. So that they’re gonna be going to the polls in November being bombarded for months by the media with stories about “Runaway inflation!” and “Sky-rocketing gas prices!” And the best we can offer is an infrastructure bill that barely anybody remembers and judges who nobody could name without Google.

Interesting…

The Slovaks offered their self propelled artillery. Now the Netherlands are offering some of the German built self propelled howitzers they have.

Self propelled howitzers are usually used within armored brigades. Towed artillery are generally used within infantry brigades.

The big problem, that I see, is that both countries only have enough howitzers for maybe 2-3 battalions of self propelled artillery. The usual ratio is one artillery battalion (18-24 howitzers) per maneuver brigade. And I suspect that Ukraine has well over 10 armored brigades.

It is generally a bad idea to have multiple different models of complicated machinery, like self propelled artillery. Trying to train soldiers to use and maintain those multiple models and to keep on hand multiple sets of spare parts is way too complicated to work well.

I’m pretty much of the mind that if the choice is between a fascist party and a not-fascist party, you vote for the not-fascists. Not voting helps the fascists.

While comparisons to the Wiemar Republic are strained, the divisions of the left seeing each other as the biggest threat is what allowed the NSDAP to slip into power. Then the left was in jail.

Speaking of Ghouliani

I may or may not have mentioned this here before, but I know I’ve dropped this at a few places but haven’t got anyone to say if they can verify or have updated info to counter it, so I’ll ask again.

On April 5th I was watching Stuttering John Melendez’s livestream show because Philip Ittner was going to be on. Before Phil was on, John had Glenn Kirschner on. At one point John asked Glenn where has Giuliani been lately and Glenn said that he thinks Rudy flipped and is cooperating with the DoJ over Jan 6 and the fake electors.

Youtube Video

(The relevant stuff is at 47:40-50:20 in the video)

Since he mentioned this the only times I’ve seen Rudy on any of the GOP Bullshit Networks he was only talking about the bullshit crime wave, and about the fake Hunter Biden Laptop or Ukraine in general. I haven’t heard him mention the election once since or even say Clownstick’s name.

Has anyone else noticed this, or seen him mention the election close to or after April 5?

We need to find a healthier and more constructive way to express that concern than knee-jerk screaming. Or lecturing as though such people are unruly children, which is another thing I’ve witnessed in recent months, especially when the subject turns to younger voters and their own concerns. A poll comes out about the 18-35 demographic not being thrilled about voting Dem and the immediate response is to tell them to “grow up.” The 35 yr old worker who was counting on those promises of free/subsidized childcare to help them out is not on the same level as a 18 yr old pothead whining that Dems haven’t made more progress on legalization. We can’t lump them all in together and act as if they need to put aside their concerns “for the good of the country” or however we choose to phrase it.

The big problem I see us facing in coming months is that we’re not just all stick and no carrot, we think that anybody who points that out is effectively a fascist or fascist-adjacent. That’s actually worse than 2010, when we were desperately trying to sell a healthcare reform bill that wouldn’t start taking effect until after the next presidential election and desperately selling pothole filling as “shovel-ready jobs” to explain why the recovery from the Great Recession seemed to still be dragging on.

sorry but I disagree….

is there still a mountain of shit to climb… yes, yes there is…. yet…

Ukraine is being helped and from the looks of things, they are winning the war of attrition
foreign policy gaffes are isolating Russia from damn near everyone and have been driving Ukraine, Sweden and Finland into NATO
the money given to lower and middle class families has ignited the economy and people ARE finding opportunities
while not resolved, those that believe in science are being and have been vaccinated
they’ve placed an educated, qualified liberal jurist onto the SCOTUS
the Jan 6th committee is causing the GOP to shit themselves and do whatever radical shit they can think of to distract that the gears are still grinding

is the GOP still fucking things up, yes… did we really expect them to stop?
the media is still mostly useless… unsure how anyone can save them from their myopic selves

there are STILL a shitpotfull of challenges, we’re still fighting and despite it all, there are STILL people working on winning. Over at Balloon Juice they’re working with getting more voters registered and fighting the illegal shit going down at the state and local levels.

you can either give in to despair or do what you can to convince people that there is a difference between the two sides… I desperately would prefer to live in a country where I don’t have to worry about what, if any religion my kids choose, to have them learn from the mistakes made rather than glorify them in our Country’s past… the thing we have to remember is that the people pulling the strings are rich and are more than willing to spend to keep it that way. They believe that life is cheap and to more than quite a few of them, we’re nothing more than pawns anyway. I see no reason to sit back and let them win, so I donate my money (and time when I can) and make sure to pay those who know how to organize and have skin in the game (as we all do) to get boots on the ground.

It’s how we turned AZ and I believe its how we flipped GA, I think we can make gains elsewhere and if I need to find a wellspring of enthusiasm, all I have to do is look at what the fuck is going on with the GOP going after LGBTQ, Women, minorities, jews, athiests and anyone who doesn’t match their tribal markers and keep at it.

Congress and the administration should work to fix these things as much as they can (which frankly isn’t much… it’s a world supply chain shock problem, not a US problem), but I wouldn’t be pants crapping terrified of these things unless they are still a big problem in September.

The main roadblock there, as with almost every single ‘Dems are bad at messaging’ issue, is the fact that political press in this country has been hardwired for GOP messaging. If it’s not dedicated conservative media machines, it’s that ‘real’ news outlets like the NYT have made it their mission statement to take the GOP at face value and assume the best of faith from them, even when they’re blatantly acting in bad faith. And if a Dem wants to say something, the only way it gets reported is if a Republican is allowed to set the frame. When so many of the platforms we have to use to spread ‘the message’ are almost perfectly slanted to privilege GOP voices to exclusion, it’s extremely hard to get the word out about anything. And when you try to point this out, all you get is kicked in the teeth and told it’s almost purely the Dems’ fault wholesale.

The WH and Congressional Dems alike have accused oil companies of price-gouging, but beyond that there’s been no real effort to do something about it. “Windfall profit tax” bills were filed in both houses of Congress, but you’d be forgiven for not knowing that because the party’s doing nothing with them. There’s no effort to get them through committees, nor is leadership making any noises about bringing them to the floor for votes. That’s leaving a lot of dead air for the media to fill in with stories about how Dems have “no answers” for high gas prices and bringing in Repubs to rant away about how Biden killing Keystone XL is why we’re paying so much at the pump.

Much of the manpower on the Atlantic Wall was composed of either second-line troops or Osttruppen (literally “Eastern troops”) who were men that had been forced into German service from Soviet territories. They were basically seen as disposable troops, that if they died fighting off the Allies then it was no great loss to the Reich. What’s worse is that the Germans made no secret of their distaste for such practices, but the realities of war meant they couldn’t turn away the manpower.

The Cult of Trump is capitalizing on that electoral amnesia I talked about up-thread to convince voters that the biggest tragedy of 2020 was not the hundreds of thousands of Americans who died from a purely preventable illness, but rather the billions in stock value that Wall Street lost when people got scared and stayed home. They’re working hard to convince voters that their personal frustrations during the pandemic, like wearing masks that they felt uncomfortable, or having big events they planned for canceled, or simply not being able to go to the bar on Friday after work, were all personal tragedies that Dems need to answer for. Why? Because not everybody died of CV-19 and that’s proof that the experts were “wrong.”

Though again, the pandemic response is another area where Dems did themselves no favors. Yeah, the national party were screaming bloody murder about the Trump WH both dragging their feet and actively undermining state-level responses, but the state and local level Dems were not exactly helping their case. Speaking again as a Virginian, I got whiplash from how Governor Blackface approached the pandemic on the state level.

First, he and state Dems dodged the issue of a shutdown or made comments that such was “unnecessary” because the number of new cases in the Commonwealth were low enough to think it wasn’t going to be an issue. Then a shutdown was imposed but there was a long list of businesses that were exempted as “essential.” Yet not two weeks into the reluctantly imposed shutdown, Northam comes out to the podium to announce that the shutdown’s being lifted for Hampton Roads beach towns in time for Memorial Day weekend. The cherry atop this shit sundae was then seeing our governor (who is a doctor) out at VA Beach that weekend, shaking hands and posing for pictures without a mask, followed by his staff making a weak sauce excuse about “he forgot it in the car.”

Yeah, Gavin Newsom was the big name in the national news, but there were plenty of stories in the local papers about Dems ignoring the very shutdowns and mandates they were making all sorts of noise about the necessity of because they didn’t want to cancel a dinner or avoid pressing the flesh with voters in time for the general election.

re: #202 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The United States needed a top-down, decisive, consistent and centralized approach to Covid.

That was not forthcoming from TFG as he was in full denial mode that there was a problem. The Dems were not in a position to do anything but scramble as best they could under the chaotic, contradictory circumstances only to be chided for being “ineffective”.

In absence of leadership from the WH, there needed to be some sort of national-level leadership from the party. We needed something like the Howard Dean “50 State Strategy” days of the party getting on the same page and sticking to it. Instead, we got this balkanization of various state parties acting in their own immediate interests to the detriment of the party at large. Which lead to situations like here in VA where hotels yelling in Northam’s ear about all the money they were losing and set to lose if they couldn’t open in time for summer tourism overrode public health concerns.

The result was a massive spike in infections that were centered in tourism-heavy cities and towns, to which the state imposed mandates…that they then left to health inspectors to enforce without any corresponding increase in funding for additional manpower. The worst a business could face at the height of the pandemic for failure to enforce mask mandates or social distancing was a fine and maybe losing their business license if they received multiple citations.

In the U.S. system of government, that is very hard to do. In the absence of a coherent federal response, the state governments had all of the power, and state level politicians are going to listen to the most powerful voices in their state, not someone at the DNC who has no authority.

Hence why there is now a lot of public resentment that the GQP are looking to capitalize on, as the absence of a unified response left state level Dems focused more on their own political interests than public safety. The national level party’s banging the war drums, declaring that the experts who are calling for shutdowns need to be listened to, while the local Dems are assuring voters that they aren’t gonna even consider a shutdown unless one becomes “necessary.”

This is, I think, the most important consideration. As a longtime socialist, the Democratic party has _always_ been far more conservative than I’d like. As rare as people like AOC are now for my voting life they’ve been even rarer.

The reality remains voting for the best candidate available. The intensely middle of the road Bill Clinton with his plan to screw up welfare was still better than the even far greater damage that another 4 years of Bush Senior or Bob Dole would have caused. That’s the calculation: how to live towards our ideals without falling into the GREEN trap: Getting Republicans Elected Every November.

Reminds me of a story I once saw about the Normandy operations: Allied troops captured four Asian men in German uniforms who spoke a language no one could understand. They were sent to London where it was determined that they were Korean. Their story was weird: they were the last survivors of a unit of Koreans who had been drafted into the Japanese Army in 1939: they had been captured by Soviet troops in one of the Russian-Japanese border wars, they had volunteered for the Red Army, fought in it til they were captured during Barbarossa, switched sides yet again, and ended the war fighting for the Wehrmacht in France. Maybe a fairly extreme example of “Osttruppen”: hopefully they got to retire peacefully back in Korea (doubtful, though)…

re: #238 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Well it sounds like the Republican plan of obstructing everything and blaming the Dems for it all so Dem voters just say Fuck It, I’m Done Voting is continuing apace.

There are several issues here which we see in our microcosm of LGF, but which are also amplified across the country as a whole, and to some extent the world. The single biggest problem is the US media, most particularly the fascist networks that pump lies, fear and hate across cable and the internet. This is then amplified by more traditional US media, which has reinforced white supremacy for decades and is now doing its part to make sure that Americans as a whole continue to hear that anything a lot of white people believe is valid on its face. This turns into a relentless framing and narrative that tells everyone in the country, Democrats are weak, Democrats are worthless, everything is corrupt, it doesn’t even matter if outright fascists and criminals have everything.

In essence, the American people themselves are poisoned. Their 24/7 media environment has desensitised most of them and taught them to accept that living in an armed labour camp instead of a society is normal. It has taught them that it’s totally normal to live in fear of being shot at any time, to expect that you are only worth the value of your labour, to accept devastating poverty in the richest nation in history, and to expect the sum total of your life to be to generate wealth for rich people. But most importantly, it drums into them every day the idea that anyone who wants to make this better is the enemy. And that’s a very hard environment to do anything in.

Not all Americans accept that, of course. Several people want it to be better. The problem is that all the systems in the US are deliberately designed to not make anything better and to reinforce an oligarchy of rich white men wherever possible. The second problem is that those of us who want to make things better have that as our expectation - that things get better. When they don’t, or get better only incrementally so, it is hard to keep the motivation to continue to try. Conversely, the other side has only one motivation, which is hate. As long as there’s the promise of more people to hate, and more pleasure in seeing those they hate suffer, they will do literally anything to get it - vote, impoverish themselves, even die. As long as they get to feel more hate.

It’s a nearly impossible situation. The whole nation marinates daily in a bath that reinforces its feudal culture, liberally seasoned with hate. I don’t have a good answer. I just know that America could be so much better. It has the potential to do anything, to really be the greatest nation on Earth, but. It. Just. Won’t. It just won’t. Because its people don’t want to. I don’t know whether Americans just don’t want to because they’re told every day not to want to, or because it’s human nature to just be indifferent to suffering that you can’t see every day. Not sure I like either implication. But I know that I want it to be better. And wanting big things to be better seems impossible, but it’s not very different from other things that seem impossible. Losing weight, finishing a degree, getting a new job, all these things seem so out of reach sometimes. But every little step counts, whether it be making a phone call, dropping a little on a GoFundMe, or just making a vote. Even if it doesn’t do much, it’s an increment. And it reminds me that I still want it to be better.

“Piers, we have a problem.”

I was standing inside the gilded confines of President Donald Trump’s exclusive Mar-a-Lago private members’ resort in Palm Beach, Florida, and one of my production team was brandishing a document with a concerned look on his face.

“What’s that?” I asked, bemused.

“This is a collection of quotes you’ve apparently said about President Trump in the past two years. Someone sent it to him in the last hour, and the quotes are not good. In fact, they’re really bad.”

I was due to start an interview with Trump in precisely eight minutes, and it was intended to be a blockbuster exclusive to rocket-launch my new global TV show, “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” on Monday, April 25.

My four-camera crew were all set up in a palatial bar, I was suited, booted, made up and had been exchanging cordial small talk with Secret Service agents designated to ensure we behaved ourselves.

snip

“REMOVED FROM OFFICE?!” he spat. “BARRED FROM EVER RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AGAIN?!”

Then he threw down the document and threw me a look of withering contempt.

Give me Joe Rogan over cancel culture vultures like Harry and Meghan anytime
“I thought we were friends?” he shouted. “This is so disloyal! After all I’ve done for you? Why would you say all this about me?”

“I thought what you did was wrong,” I replied, feeling myself beginning to sweat.

This wasn’t going well.

Some of our news media are selling an agenda and an ideology, the problem is that lots of them are just selling advertising time and do not care what kind of crap they broadcast as long as it appeals to their target audience.

Plus it is cheaper to get an intern to mine the Internet for stories than to pay money for investigative reporting.

People like Breitbart and Matt Drudge made their “reputations” from just floating whatever dreck they wanted to see on the Internet until the networks picked it up and ran with it because “Trending on Twitter” is a news item in itself these days.

And THIS is really the crux of the problem. Twitter is literally the fallacy of the vocal minority, writ large. Everybody thinks Twitter is representative of the world’s population, when in reality, Twitter is an extremely small subset of the planet’s people (or any individual country’s), and is generally comprised of the types of people who WANT to be on Twitter so that they can complain about what they want to complain about. That’s the overall problem with social media; it’s so easy to find an opinion you agree with, and a community to reinforce those beliefs. That’s how the crazy really got started, by like-minded right-wingers connecting and forming an impenetrable bubble that they retreated to whenever their worldview was challenged by outside sources. Mrs. Fish challenges me to push outside my left-leaning bubble daily, the problem is that I refuse to deal in the crazy, so I’m not sure where I can go to keep myself honest.

a bit more of the imperfect analogy:

we all have political issues we are passionate about;
that affect us personally.
generally we want those things either protected (what we have and want) or fundamentally changed (to get what we want).

it is important to be engaged;
to understand the system and the (two) food choices we face;
and then to act - to make a decision.

that’s how to participate.
your life depends on eating and choosing what is food.

and yet, it’s not all or nothing.

in that if you choose ‘wisely’ you won’t get what you want and you also won’t die.
we have to learn to live our individual lives and be, if not satisfied, at least tolerant of the crappy food; because we don’t run the kitchen.

so be informed - read the menu;
be aware - understand what poison is;
then participate - order from the menu.

Don’t think that choosing and still not being satisfied is the same as nothing at all.
Nothing at all is you starving, withering away, and dying.
No, you still have your daily life; it’s all there is.
Excel at your life without over-obsessing about the lousy food.

Sure, taking over the kitchen is a lofty goal; don’t let go of it.

I am glad they caught him.

A suspect was charged early Thursday with the brutal slaying of Queens mom Orsolya Gaal — with multiple sources telling The Post he was her handyman ex-lover.

David Bonola, 44, was taken into custody and charged with murder, criminal tampering and criminal possession of a weapon over the brutal weekend stabbing, the NYPD confirmed early Thursday.

Multiple sources told The Post that Bonola was the handyman thought to have also been Gaal’s lover — and that he gave a full confession after his arrest.

He was picked up thanks to a pair of blood-soaked boots left at Gaal’s stately Forest Hills home after she was stabbed nearly 60 times in the early hours Saturday, sources said.

Bonola, from Richmond Hill, has no prior arrests, according to cops.

Gaal, 51, went out to a show at Lincoln Center with friends on Friday evening — and then hung out at a bar in her neighborhood, seemingly as if expecting to meet someone who never showed, sources said.

Sorry to elicit so many negative reactions to my posts. I am seeing us headed off a cliff if we don’t get our stuff together and we’ll deserve it..

If this is not a place to voice concerns then I’ll find another outlet.

Oh, for fuck’s sake…

I totally get your frustration. I honestly do. You’re not wrong for expressing what you’ve been expressing. Unfortunately, not everyone is agreeing with you and are pushing back.

Jesus Christ, I’ve had some members tell me in no uncertain terms how wrong they think I am about Garland. I disagree, massively, but it’s not a reason to flounce.

I got my ass handed to me a few years ago by mostly everyone here because a long timer I didn’t recognize creates a page featuring shit from American Spectator. Literally the kind of thing that Charles told Dark Falcon to knock off, and I got down dinged into oblivion for criticizing this person for the same action.

It sucked but it happens. Apologies if I missed it, but no one so far has told you need to leave.

This kind of bullshit is how we wound up with Trump the first time. My 30-something neighbor across the street is just as fed up as with Republicans like everyone else here, but he fucking sat out the NJ gubernatorial race last year because he didn’t think it was important.

We almost wound up with a MAGAt governor here because of people like him. His vote mattered and he fell down on the job.

I don’t know what to tell you. I’m really, really worried about November and more needs to be done. That said, things like preventing women from being imprisoned for abortion are reasons enough for me to vote Dem and not give up. Your milage may vary.

i think my analogy is close to effective reality

we must eat lest we do not starve and die.

menu option 1 - the lousy food
menu option 2 - the poison
there is no other option on the menu

choose neither / don’t eat and you are still poisoned.
you may die faster than option 2, maybe slower.
in any case you will still die long before a diet of option 1.

sure, you can tweak the metaphor and make it say something slightly different.
I see it this way.

I always vote D
I lament that desantis is governor, that TFG was president
When D’s win, i lament that i don’t always get what i want

“In the days after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol building, the two top Republicans in Congress, Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Sen. Mitch McConnell, told associates they believed President Trump was responsible for inciting the deadly riot and vowed to drive him from politics,” the New York Times reports.

McCarthy went so far as to say he would push Mr. Trump to resign immediately: “I’ve had it with this guy.”

Said McConnell to top advisers: “The Democrats are going to take care of the son of a bitch for us.”

“But within weeks both men backed off an all-out fight with Mr. Trump because they feared retribution from him and his political movement. CAVED BECAUSE THEY ARE COWARDS WHO STAND FOR NOTHING BUT HOLDING ONTO THEIR OWN POWER. Their drive to act faded fast as it became clear it would mean difficult votes that would put them at odds with most of their colleagues.”

Last Monday, I was called in early so the early dishwasher could go home sick. Turns out she has COVID. She’s supposed to be my replacement today. I think not. She’s the one who trained me. I’ve told co-workers that she’s the one who really runs the restaurant. She continued wearing a mask after the mandate was dropped, but was a little more relaxed about it, saying she kept it on in sympathy with her kids who had to keep wearing them at their school.

Time to go get ready for ‘vacation’.

The New York Times has a great story on the massive logistical effort to move weapons to Ukraine. One of the big takeaways: nations are flooding gear into Ukraine, but few want to actually talk about it: “[N]ations are trying not to advertise to Moscow exactly what is being provided. France says it has supplied 100 million euros of military equipment to Ukraine, without specifying what it has sent. Some countries have no desire to goad the Russian bear.” There’s also this sentence, which is either the scoop of the week, or an embarrassing journalistic error:

The United States has also agreed to provide some 155-millimeter howitzers, along with 40,000 matching rounds, while trying to buy Soviet-standard ammunition from countries that use it, including nations outside of Europe, like Afghanistan and even India, a longstanding buyer of Russian arms.

The U.S. is trying to buy weapons from the Taliban? Did India, one of the few nations still happy and eager to do business with Russia, actually get approached to sell arms headed to Ukraine? Did they say “yes”? In any case, 30 countries are assisting Ukraine in its war effort, which is 30 more than are assisting Russia, all coordinated by the United States. No one does logistics like the United States.

Mike Tyson seemed to lose his cool on a plane on Wednesday night … repeatedly punching a man in the face after the guy had apparently annoyed him.

TMZ Sports has learned … the incident all went down at around 10:30 PM PT as Tyson was slated to fly out of San Francisco International Airport to Florida.

A witness on the plane says as he and his friend were boarding Tyson’s flight … the boxing legend was initially cool with them and the other passengers.

In the Bible there is a verse that states, “Blessed is the man with many children, for his quiver is full.” (Or something like that; I don’t remember the exact phrasing.) This has given rise to the “quiver full” movement, which means that a woman should actively try to have as many children as she possibly can - including risky pregnancies that may kill her - or she isn’t being a good Christian. The only woman I ever wanted to physically harm in my life was one such woman, who sneered down her nose at my mom when she learned that my mom had her tubes tied after me because of life-threatening complications.

So, watched The Batman on HBO Max last night with the Mrs.

I’m putting my thoughts behind the veil… because, spoilers.

So, overall thought it very well done. Pattinson was a brooding almost emo take on the Batman character. Zoe Kravitz did great as Catwoman; other characters were well done and created a good take on Gotham’s underground.

Interesting how they looped back to Wayne family history as setting up so much crime in action (funding crime waves via a good works renewal effort across Gotham). Riddler was unhinged in a good way, and his motivations.

There was one fight scene in particular that I thought looked amazing - the shootout in the hallway in the dark, and Batman gets silhouetted by all the gunfire. It’s a striking set-piece and mirrors how we’d see comic book panel shots.

The fight on the scaffolding was also quite well done and Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright is always fantastic) threaded the needle on supporting Batman and doing the right thing for law and justice.

True, but the problem is that the German economy was tied to Russia’s gas and their ability to respond to something like this was not planned for. I would have to go dig, but Scholz had to admit that Germany can’t respond.

My cat tree is a pretty solid oval shape with four shelves. Not cheap to get, but I like the look so much better than the plywood and carpet monstrosities.

In the current layout it occupies half the window space in the office/computer room. There is a towel on one of the shelves and Floof Cat does like lying on that towel to nap. (Photo above is older, but does show the rough shape of the tree.)

I love the idea of wall-mounted cat shelf patterns. But I am renting the place and don’t want to start doing moly-bolts or whatever would be required to get them securely anchored.* Plus given Floof Cat’s known occasional attacks of non-grace I would live in fear of 16lbs of cat suddenly falling on me as I sat on the couch. I get oof-ed when she jumps onto me from the ground. I don’t want to know how much kinetic energy she’d build up by being 5+’ off the ground.

* - Current lease actually bans doing stuff like moly-bolts and large fasteners. Plus the stick-on ones as well.

The Russians have had ability to end life on the planet for decades with rockets and missiles they have stockpiled by the thousands. This newest missile doesn’t change that calculus one bit. The Russians may think that FOBS or delivering missiles via the South Pole somehow changes this in their favor, or that it gives the US less time to respond because the boost phase is shorter with this new rocket design, or that US ABM systems can’t handle this kind of warhead and countermeasures they deploy.

They seem to also ignore that the US still adheres to MAD - and if the Russians launch strikes against the US, then the US will launch our missiles against Russia, and we can certainly end life there just as completely as they can do to the US. We have ballistic missile subs whose sole purpose is to fire off the salvo that ends Russia. We have land based rockets as well, to say nothing of air launched cruise missiles for the bespoke killing effort.

It’s a lot of bluster to cover up the fact that Russia has failed to overrun Ukraine and is mired in a stalemate from which they have no solution other than change the goalposts on an almost daily basis.

The suspect in the case has been dead since 2003, said Lynsey Mukomel, a spokeswoman for the attorney general. No charges will be filed in the case, she said.

“While our efforts cannot bring Eric back, nor render justice in the eyes of the law, we do hope the family is vindicated by our department’s confirmation that Eric was indeed the victim of a homicide,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement.

McGinnis family attorney Leonard Mungo questioned why the attorney general’s office did not release the name of the suspect.

“While we appreciate the attorney general’s office reopening the case, they also fell far short as to naming that suspect. We believe it is inadequate and disrespectful to protect the name of a murderer. We request a disclosure immediately for the sake of transparency,” Mungo said in a statement.

Well, obviously, the bk could go throgh the bankruptcy courts, which means that the plaintiffs are now creditors and have to wait until the trustee sells and then pays the creditors.

If the bankruptcy proceeds, creditor recovery will depend on how aggressively the bankruptcy trustee goes after Info Wars/Jones’s “protected assets.” The trustee receives tiered compensation for value of assets recovered from the debtor.

I bet the creditor’s committee meetings will be fun.

An issue I have with the repeated idea that Democrats are failing at messaging is there is never any suggestion as to what to do better. ‘Hammer on a message’, ‘have a message that resonates’, and so forth. These aren’t suggestions, these are concepts.

The US media decides what narrative gets presented and what messages are repeated. CNN can run 20 stories on inflation and rising gas prices. They can bring on 20 Republicans to say it’s Biden’s fault. They can bring on 1 Democrat to say it’s a worldwide phenomenon and that things aren’t really as bad, but the next day there’ll be another 20 stories about the same, repeating only the talking points Republicans want them to repeat.

Pointing to poll numbers and saying that this is evidence that Democrats are messaging badly is drawing a causal link where there really isn’t one.

Interestingly enough, and not completely tied to the war, India decided to scrap a purchase of 48 Mi-17V military transport helicopters from Russia. Officially, it was scrapped in favor of domestic development, and has been in the works for a while. India has been trying to reduce its dependency on foreign military imports.

Unofficially, India has been increasingly pissed off with the quality of Russian helicopters, even more so after Bipin Rawat, India’s Chief of Defence Staff (equivalent to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), was killled in a crash of one.
