It makes me wonder how much of the social progress of the last 50 years has been real, and how much is just a shabby plaster job that is disintegrating before our eyes.

A lot of it _IS_ real. That’s why the reactionaries are so scared. Look at the polling numbers on today’s youth - the far right has lost them and they know it. That’s why the next step is the same as it was in Spain back in 1936: Foment civil war so that those who couldn’t get elected can seize power.
