The government is compelling a religious organization to violate one of its fundamental tenets. There are disturbing First Amendment implications here. Just because we may disagree with the church doesn’t mean we should disregard religious autonomy. By the same token I disagree with what a Klansman says, but I support his right to say it. The Constitution is everything. It is all that matters in this country.

I’ve honestly given this a great deal of thought in the last couple of weeks, since I myself have worked for Catholic agencies and been put through this.

I don’t believe that the Catholic Church is being asked to violate its tenets by providing full health coverage to its employees. This is simply because my health coverage is part of my salary. It is not theirs, it is mine, and when I pay for birth control, it should not matter to my employers if I do so with my health coverage, or the money that they pay me.

If they wanted to refuse to hire persons using birth control, I might actually think they had a point, but this doesn’t fly with me.
