I don’t really know how the royal family makes money other than salaries from their other occupations (in Harry’s case the military.) The duchies apparently are not really at the discretion of the royal family, though of course they have the privilege of using their lands for their own pleasure.

You’re right about that. The properties only nominally belong to the Crown. Most are held in trust by the government. So, while Charles can earn income from his duchy, he can’t just sell off a chunk of it for quick profits.
